Plan container haulage and placement together
An empty storage container, a loaded shipping container and an office module are different loads. Construction, actual weight and lifting points determine the operation.
Establish type and transport condition
Give the number, type and size, such as 20-foot, 40-foot or High Cube. Office modules may have different dimensions. External measurements must include additions.
Tare weight is not maximum permitted gross weight. Add actual contents for a loaded unit. Manufacturer instructions determine whether it can be lifted full; a lightweight flat-pack store is not automatically handled like a shipping container.
Separate lifting from unloading contents
State the facilities available at each end: terminal equipment, crane or suitable lifting gear. A container chassis transports the unit but cannot necessarily set it on the ground. A loader crane, side loader or separate crane may be needed.
Placing the container is not unloading its pallets or fittings. That work must be expressly agreed. Internal securing and weight distribution need checking before movement.
| Service | Not automatically included |
|---|---|
| Transport the container | Set it down without lifting equipment |
| Set down the container | Unload pallets and fittings |
| Deliver to the terminal | Sea carriage and customs clearance |
| Position on site | Foundations, connections and local permissions |
Prepare the final position
Describe access, manoeuvring space, ground conditions, obstacles and truck-to-placement distance. Load and reach determine the lifting setup; a large crane cannot place every weight everywhere.
Supports, door orientation and any local site permissions need clarification. Transport does not supply suitable foundations or permission to use the site. Office connections need competent disconnection and reinstatement.
Include all journeys and time charges
A quote can cover empty positioning, loaded transport, return, cranes, terminal handling and waiting. Check whether it covers one site move or an entire import/export chain.
After agreed free time, carrier-owned containers can attract usage or storage-related charges. Time inside and outside a terminal may be charged separately or together. Return depot and deadlines therefore matter.
An isolated kilometre rate is not a reliable total. Compare weights, lifting reach, included time, return movements, VAT and surcharges. Old tariff tables do not replace a current quote.
Coordinate terminal, customs and sea carriage
Terminal collection needs appropriate releases, references and appointments. Customs arrangements must match the route. An inland container transport quote does not automatically include sea freight.
Packed containers within the relevant sea-carriage rules require verified gross mass, VGM, before loading aboard. Agree who weighs, submits and manages the deadline. An initial approximate weight is not that verified declaration.
Record condition, container number and any seal at handover. These details are needed for execution without unnecessarily extending the first enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
Can a loaded container be transported?
Only if construction, condition, gross weight and lifting method permit it. Some storage units cannot be lifted full.
Is a crane always included?
No. Specify loading and unloading requirements separately.
Does the price include sea freight?
Only if agreed. Inland terminal haulage and an overseas voyage are distinct services.
Can an office container be relocated?
Yes, following checks of dimensions, weight, lifting points and access. Connections need separate agreement.
