Check feasibility before booking specialist transport
Weight, dimensions, sensitivity or difficult access can call for specialist equipment. A specialist job is not automatically an abnormal load requiring a permit.
Describe the useful load characteristics
Provide the item, quantity, transport dimensions and weight. The heaviest individual piece matters for lifting; a combined total is insufficient. Drawings, manufacturer data or a site visit can confirm an initial estimate.
Clarify removable parts and components that must stay upright. Centre of gravity, lifting points and sensitive finishes affect equipment selection. These characteristics need assessment rather than assumptions from a photograph.
Assess both collection and delivery
A suitable truck can still be stopped by a gate, corner, ramp or unsuitable surface. Identify restrictions, available height and the distance to the placement point. Surface capacity needs assessment for heavy loads.
An existing crane or forklift must have suitable capacity and reach. Agree loading and unloading responsibilities separately. Slinging, guidance and internal positioning are not automatically included in the driver’s price.
Plan route checks and permissions
If the loaded vehicle combination exceeds legal size or weight limits, applicable permits and conditions must be assessed. The vehicle and load together matter, not just the item being moved.
Specialists and relevant authorities check routes, axle loads, clearances and possible escorts. International journeys add the requirements of the countries crossed. A requested date replaces neither permits nor feasibility confirmation.
Price the complete operation
Vehicle, crew, approach and return travel, cranes, equipment, route assessment, permits, escorts and waiting can contribute to the price. Dismantling, reinstallation and packaging are separate unless explicitly included.
Confirm assumptions and billing units: hourly rates, minimum durations or a fixed price. Crane reach changes usable lifting capacity; nominal tonnage alone does not make two offers comparable.
A universal kilometre rate is unreliable for these different tasks. Compare the same load, handover points and agreed operations, including VAT and extra charges.
Record condition and responsibilities
Agree a contact person and how the goods will be made ready. Disconnecting, draining, immobilising and recommissioning equipment require appropriate expertise.
Declare hazardous substances, batteries, temperature requirements or contaminated parts. A specialist vehicle is not automatically authorised for every substance. Record condition and accessories and clarify insurance, liability limits and damage reporting.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose the truck?
No. Describe the goods and handover points so appropriate transport and lifting equipment can be selected.
Is specialist transport always an abnormal load?
No. Fragile goods or difficult access can need specialist equipment without exceeding legal limits.
Could a site visit be needed?
Yes, particularly for unknown measurements or difficult access. Your first enquiry does not require a complete engineering plan.
Can the journey cross a border?
Yes, after route, permit, customs and handling checks. Foreign collection and delivery locations are supported.
