Compare the complete forwarding service
A forwarder organises a transport chain, sometimes using several carriers. A useful quote identifies the journey covered and the additional work included.
Match the route to the deadline
European road options include groupage, part loads and full loads. Sea and air freight have different handling and cost structures for overseas destinations. You can request advice without already selecting a mode.
LCL sea freight shares container space, while FCL reserves a container for the shipment. Shared loads can involve extra handling and processing charges. Compare the complete journey rather than the main freight leg alone.
| Transport option | Check when comparing |
|---|---|
| Road groupage | Transfers, transit time and delivery requirements |
| LCL sea freight | Shared space and handling at both ends |
| FCL sea freight | Container supply, loading, unloading and return |
| Air freight | Chargeable weight, security screening and airport onward transport |
Use packed dimensions
Describe the goods, package count and type, gross weight and external dimensions including pallets and protection. Non-stackable freight occupies different space from packages that can safely carry another load.
Chargeable weight can differ from actual weight. Volume, loading metres and minimum charges depend on the mode and tariff. Do not apply one volumetric factor indiscriminately across road, sea and air. Mixed packages will need a packing list later.
Define collection and final delivery
A port-to-port quote does not automatically cover collection at the supplier or delivery into a warehouse. Clarify terminal handling, tail lifts, unloading and access restrictions.
The agreed Incoterm, named place and version help allocate costs and risks between seller and buyer. They do not replace a specific forwarding instruction. An unknown delivery term should be clarified before booking rather than selected at random.
Compare every cost component
Separate origin transport, main carriage, final delivery, surcharges, customs processing and possible waiting or storage charges. Import taxes are distinct from customs brokerage fees. Check currency, VAT treatment and quote validity.
One published tariff cannot establish a meaningful Swiss average across routes, seasons, package sizes and transport modes. Compare the same shipment, endpoints and timing. Ask which discrepancies could trigger an adjustment.
Prepare documents and handovers
Commercial invoices, packing lists and any permits must match the actual goods. Declare batteries, chemicals and temperature-sensitive freight early; acceptance requires confirmation.
Agree status updates, proof of delivery and the damage reporting process. Liability under carriage terms is not automatically insurance for the full goods value. Consider the need, cover and exclusions of additional cargo insurance.
A requested arrival date is not yet a confirmed delivery date. Departures, transfers, customs and the final delivery leg all belong in the schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose a transport mode first?
No. Provide the goods, route and timing flexibility so the forwarder can recommend suitable options.
Is customs clearance always included?
No. Check export, import and transit separately, including responsibility for documents and taxes.
Can I send just one pallet?
Yes, where the goods and route are suitable. Groupage can avoid reserving an entire vehicle.
Does an initial estimate fix the price?
Only within the agreed scope. Different measurements, weights or services can change the cost; confirm the booking basis.
