From assessing water damage to restoring your property

A water stain, a soaked floor and a flooded basement need different responses. The cause, current condition and affected materials determine which drying, cleaning and repairs are appropriate.

Deal with immediate danger first

Quoti is a quotation portal, not an emergency dispatch service. Do not wait for offers while water is still entering or there is immediate danger. Contact the appropriate emergency contractor or emergency services. Do not enter a flooded area where electricity may pose a risk.

Turn off a water supply only if you can do so safely. Inform the property manager or owner and the relevant insurer promptly. Document damage when safe and keep receipts. Immediate protective measures and later planned reinstatement are separate stages.

What restoration can involve

Coordinated work avoids reopening a newly repaired surface because moisture remains underneath. Not every incident requires every stage.

  1. Establish cause and extent. Repair a known leak or locate the source. Assess visible damage and possible moisture in concealed layers.
  2. Deal with water and affected materials. Remove standing water and establish what can be retained, cleaned or removed. Wastewater and dirty floodwater need specific assessment.
  3. Dry and monitor. Choose methods for the walls, ceilings and floor construction. Record progress and completion through suitable measurements.
  4. Reinstate and inspect. Close openings, replace finishes and complete surfaces after technical clearance. Check the finished work together.

Drying the room air may not be enough

A dehumidifier reduces moisture in the air. Water beneath floor finishes, in insulation or in cavities may require targeted drying or material removal. A surface that looks dry does not prove that the whole construction is dry.

Duration depends on material, penetration depth, water quantity and method. A fixed number of days without assessment is not a reliable commitment. Agree who takes measurements, the completion criteria and who closes any openings. Suspected mould requires attention to the cause and appropriate treatment; painting over it is insufficient.

Compare the complete restoration cost

A general price per square metre would be misleading: limited surface damage differs substantially from soaked insulation or wastewater contamination. Obtain an assessment and a written scope first. A low equipment hire rate alone does not establish the total cost.

Clarify responsibilities and insurance

The relevant insurance depends on the cause, damaged property, policy and cantonal rules. Natural-hazard cover does not automatically cover every leaking pipe. Building damage and movable belongings may fall under different policies.

Report the incident promptly and agree planned restoration and subsequent cost increases with the parties concerned. A quote or a contractor’s usual work with insurers does not constitute approval of your claim. Photographs, measurement reports, invoices and electricity records help the assessment. You do not need a policy number for your initial Quoti enquiry.

Useful information for an initial assessment

Describe the current condition, known or suspected cause, affected components and approximate extent. State whether drying has already taken place and whether a completion measurement exists. There is no need to open floors or obtain measuring equipment yourself.

Have any existing plans, photos and reports ready for a site visit. Discuss noise, equipment access, room occupancy and coordination of trades. Identify completed tasks so that leak repairs or drying are not quoted a second time.

Frequently asked questions

Is restoration the same as drying?

No. Drying can be one part. Restoration may also include source investigation, cleaning, removal, disposal and reinstatement.

Can I request just the remaining repairs?

Yes. Say that drying has already been carried out and keep available measurement reports ready so the remaining work can be defined.

Must floors and walls always be removed?

No. Retention or removal depends on construction, condition and possible contamination. A photograph or area figure alone cannot establish this.

Can I stay in the rooms during drying?

That depends on the damage, method and possible contamination. Have occupancy assessed and agree noise, access and operating hours.

Will insurance cover the whole invoice?

That is not automatic. Cover, excess and assessment of the actual incident determine payment. Obtain confirmation for the planned work.
