Remove mould and understand its cause

Mould patches are more than a cosmetic issue. A lasting solution considers moisture, affected materials and the actual damage together. A quote should show whether it covers removal alone or also assessment, drying and reinstatement.

Include the moisture source in the assessment

Moisture may come from leaking pipes or building elements, an earlier water incident or condensation on cold surfaces. Building characteristics, use and ventilation can interact. A patch alone therefore does not establish who caused the problem.

If the source is unclear, a specialist should assess the damage on site. Returning patches, a musty smell and materials that remain damp are useful observations. State what is known without having to diagnose the building yourself.

Visible area is not the full remediation scope

An initial request needs the area of visible patches, not the home's floor area. Scattered patches in several rooms may need different treatment from one continuous patch. Hidden growth may extend beyond what is visible.

Colour alone does not reliably establish risk or the treatment needed. A small area is not automatic permission for DIY work either. Material, density of growth and other signs also matter.

Visible area is not the full remediation scope
Affected elementWhat a specialist should assess
Smooth surfaceIs growth superficial, and can the material be retained?
Wallpaper, plaster or another porous layerHow deep is the damage, and which layers may need removal?
Window area or jointWhat moisture source exists, and is cleaning or replacement needed?
Furniture or textilesIs suitable cleaning possible, or must the affected item be replaced?
Odour without visible patchesWhat investigation is useful before removal is quoted?

What makes remediation appropriate

Painting over mould or merely killing it does not reliably address the cause or the remaining material. Depending on the surface, cleaning or removal of affected materials may be necessary. Protecting adjacent rooms and final cleaning belong in the plan.

Ask how the spread of mould particles will be controlled and when drying and reinstatement will happen. Do not direct a fan at affected patches yourself or start dry sanding or scraping. The specialist determines methods and sequence from the damage.

Mould can irritate the airways, skin or eyes. Seek medical assessment if you have health symptoms. No health information is needed in the quote request.

Not every situation needs a mould test

Visible growth does not first need confirmation through a test you commission yourself. Professional assessment of moisture and the building is often more useful. Air or surface samples cannot simply establish an individual's health risk.

If a specialist proposes sampling, ask which decision will depend on the result. Scope, report and cost should be clear beforehand. A musty smell alone is not a confirmed mould diagnosis.

Price assessment separately from removal

Depth of damage, material, access and protective measures determine the work. A square-metre rate without a specification helps little. Drying, disposal and reinstatement may be separate items.

One published Swiss example for assessment, report and travel is CHF 475–650 excluding VAT, checked in October 2026. It covers an assessment, not removal. Laboratory inclusions require confirmation; it is not a general remediation tariff.

  • Assessment. Site visit, investigation of the cause, agreed measurements and report.
  • Remediation. Protection, treatment or removal of affected materials and disposal.
  • Completion. Coordinated drying, surrounding-area cleaning, reinstatement and checks.
  • Unresolved items. Clarify additional hidden damage, travel, tax and any other trades needed.

Prepare a useful request

Record which rooms are affected, approximate patch sizes and whether moisture has already been assessed. Photos may help later but cannot replace every site visit. Do not open building components to take them.

In rented accommodation, promptly notify the landlord or management and coordinate further commissions. A photograph or the colour of growth alone cannot determine who pays.

  1. Collect observations. Describe visible patches, odour, recurrence and known water damage.
  2. State the help needed. Assessment, removal or both; be clear if the cause is still unknown.
  3. Define quote boundaries. Check included materials and work, and what happens if hidden damage is found.
  4. Results and follow-up. Agree how removal, the addressed moisture cause and subsequent monitoring will be documented.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the mould species?

No. Describe visible patches and known moisture. Identifying the species is not required to request quotes and is not automatically necessary for every job.

Can I request help for a musty smell alone?

Yes. Choose assessment. Without visible growth, there is no need to estimate an affected area; the smell may have other causes.

Is repainting enough?

Not as complete remediation. Growth and the moisture source must be addressed appropriately. A new coat alone can conceal continuing damage.

Are new wallpaper or joints included?

Only if explicitly agreed. Removal, drying, replacement materials and decorating may be separate services.

Why is a site visit sometimes needed?

A photo does not always show the depth of growth or the moisture source. A visit helps define necessary work and the limits of a firm quote.
