Stage direction: duties, rehearsals and costs
Stage direction develops the artistic production and guides rehearsals. Show calling coordinates cues, transitions and the technical team during a live event. You can request either role or both together. Existing material, remaining tasks and required attendance define the scope; a single performance day rarely describes the whole workload.
What directing work do you need?
Theatre direction addresses interpretation, scenes, characters and ensemble work. Event direction often connects hosting, contributions, music and technology in time. Creative development and running the show are not automatically the same assignment. Define the role before comparing a general package.
| Assignment | Define the scope |
|---|---|
| Concept | Idea, dramatic structure and scene or programme outline. |
| Rehearsal direction | Working with participants and implementing the concept. |
| Show calling | Cues, transitions and technical coordination. |
Build on existing material
A chosen script, an initial idea and a rehearsed programme are different starting points. State available scripts, cast, scenes and technical plans. Managing an existing programme does not require redeveloping the whole production. A new staging needs concept work and coordination before the first rehearsal.
Script selection, adaptation, coaching, artist booking and production management may add work. Include them explicitly if required. The initial enquiry does not need full unpublished scripts, confidential presentations or cast identity lists.
Allow for rehearsals and the ensemble
Stage headcount and experience affect rehearsals. An amateur ensemble may need different support from an established professional team. Agree days, duration, locations and absences. A calendar is more useful than a vague promise to find enough time later.
Scene work, technical rehearsals, full runs and a dress rehearsal may be needed. This time differs from the running time. If scope is unsettled, the director can propose a rehearsal plan. The first performance date and room availability still need to align.
Coordinate technology, stage and responsibility
Direction and technicians should use the same current programme. Agree lighting, sound, media and scene-change cues and approvals. Multiple contributions, remote links and fast transitions need a shared sequence. Direction does not automatically supply audio, stage construction or a responsible safety lead.
Performances, locations and digital contributions
Several performances differ from one longer event. Agree attendance after opening night and remaining duties. Changing venues may require adaptations and coordination. Artistic development, technical setup and operating performances can be commissioned separately.
Digital and hybrid formats must connect appearances, remote links, cameras and media. Distinguish stage direction from video direction or streaming production. Concept advice should involve travel and show operations only if attendance is actually requested.
Compare directing costs clearly
Fees may cover a defined project or agreed working time. Compare concept work, rehearsals, performances and extras separately. Work before and after rehearsal still exists when only attendance is visible. Agree travel, accommodation, changes and revivals too.
| Component | Agree before commissioning |
|---|---|
| Concept | Existing material, outline and revisions. |
| Rehearsals | Days, daily hours and preparation. |
| Performances | Number and actual requested attendance. |
| Additional duties | Adaptation, coaching, production or technical work. |
A short enquiry with clear scope
Describe the format, role, current stage and idea briefly. Rehearsal or performance work benefits from headcount, days, performances and location. Running time, ensemble experience, other venues and open duties can go in one shared note. Detail can follow; a finished directing book is not required for initial quotes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does stage direction cost?
Concepts, rehearsals, performances and extras define the scope. The performance day alone is insufficient for comparison.
Is stage direction only for theatre?
No. Shows and live events can need it too. Distinguish artistic development from running the programme.
Can I enquire about rehearsal support only?
Yes. Describe the existing concept, participants and time. Performance attendance should be agreed separately.
Are equipment and artists included?
Not automatically. Direction, artist booking, technical delivery and materials are distinct services.
Does the director attend every performance?
It depends on the assignment. Agree opening night, later performances and ongoing show calling.
Do I need a finished directing book?
No. A short description of the idea, current stage and requested support is enough initially.
