Roll-up banner printing: hardware, artwork and reuse
A roll-up combines a printed graphic with a retractable support system. A new complete system and a replacement graphic have different requirements. A clear request states actual counts, visible dimensions, artwork, use and the components you need.
Separate complete systems from replacement graphics
Clarify whether you need a new roll-up with cassette and pole or only a new graphic for existing hardware. Replacement requires assessment of the model, width and attachment. An identical visible width does not automatically mean identical graphics or compatible profiles.
Agree who checks the cassette and fits the new graphic. A print-only price does not automatically include the change. Damaged or unidentified hardware may need inspection before reuse.
Align visible size with the production file
State the desired visible width and height and available space. The full print size may differ because of attachments, the leader or hidden areas. Use the template for the actual chosen hardware.
For several sizes or artworks, one common list with counts per version is enough. Keep important details outside hidden areas and check readability at the intended distance. Enlarging a small image does not automatically make it suitable for a large display.
Choose hardware for use and transport
An occasional event, frequent venue changes and daily reception use place different demands on the cassette, base and transport. Compare handling, total weight, footprint and future graphic changes.
Outdoor use requires an explicitly suitable complete system. A water-resistant graphic alone does not make the stand wind-resistant. Check venue requirements as well and have any requested material evidence confirmed for the actual product.
| Use | Useful comparison point |
|---|---|
| Occasional indoor event | Complete package, setup and storage |
| Regular venue changes | Cassette, bag, weight and handling |
| Daily reception use | Footprint, finish and care |
| New graphic in existing hardware | Model, attachments and replacement scope |
| Planned outdoor use | Explicit suitability and site conditions |
Assess the printed material and presentation together
Film, textile and other suitable display materials can have different finishes and light transmission. Background and lighting affect the result. Clarify single- or double-sided presentation; two printed sides need compatible hardware.
The graphic should present correctly with suitable tension in the intended construction. Choose material and cassette together. Flatness, scratch resistance or fire behaviour cannot be inferred from a material name for every finished roll-up.
Agree files, design and approval
Describe whether you have final print files, a logo and text or need new design work. The printer should check format, bleed, hidden attachments and resolution at final size. You do not need to diagnose technical file quality yourself.
Check wording, contact details, languages and artwork allocation. A PDF approval shows the layout but generally does not replace a binding colour proof on the actual material. For important colour requirements, agree a suitable check before production.
Compare the complete delivery package
Compare identical visible sizes, counts, artwork and use requirements. A complete system and a loose replacement graphic are not equivalent offers. File work, replacement fitting, bags, transport and accessories belong in the total.
Choose the cheapest suitable complete execution that meets quality and timing. Reusing intact compatible hardware can be useful, but include inspection and changing the graphic in the comparison. Unknown shipping or your own transport must not be treated as free.
| Component | Record in the quote |
|---|---|
| Printed graphic | Material, visible sizes, artwork and printed sides |
| Hardware | Cassette, pole, profiles and necessary feet |
| Preparation | Design, file check, revisions and approval |
| Replacement job | Compatibility check and requested graphic change |
| Handover | Bag, packing, collection or shipping |
Clarify setup and storage
Ask for instructions for the model actually supplied. The graphic is under tension when pulled out; move it in a controlled way and avoid improvised work on the spring mechanism. Ordinary setup differs from changing the graphic.
Store the retracted system dry and protected. Before an event, check components, print appearance and secure standing. Have transport marks or damaged profiles assessed rather than compensating by pulling harder.
From the need to a usable roll-up
Before production, confirm which hardware and artworks belong together and exactly which components will be supplied.
- Need. State new hardware or replacement, counts, sizes and use.
- Assessment. Agree model, material, template and components.
- Approval. Check layout, wording and artwork allocation.
- Handover. Check the complete package, visible image and instructions.
Key details for your request
One short common overview works for several systems. The provider can assess the remaining technical questions.
- Versions. Count per artwork and visible size.
- Existing hardware. Available model and required change where known.
- Use. Venue, frequency, transport and requested viewing sides.
- Delivery. File status, complete components and required date.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order only a new graphic?
Yes, if it fits the existing system. Clarify model, attachments and changing the graphic before production.
Are visible height and file height identical?
Not always. Attachments and hidden areas may require extra material. Use the actual hardware template.
Is a carry bag always included?
No. Have the bag and other components listed explicitly in the package.
Can a roll-up stand outdoors?
Only with a confirmed suitable complete system and appropriate site conditions. Water resistance of the graphic alone is insufficient.
How should I describe several artworks?
List count, size and artwork together. Identify different language versions clearly.
Do I need to repair the hardware myself?
No. Ask the provider about inspection and replacement. Do not improvise work on the tensioned mechanism.
