Plan the pool as a complete project

The pool shell is only part of the investment. Location, building work, connections and future maintenance also determine what suits your property and intended use.

Which construction method fits?

An above-ground pool, a prefabricated shell and a custom-built pool need different preparation. Material alone does not define what a price includes. Lined pools can also use several different supporting structures.

Compare pool costs on the same basis

A package with equipment is not necessarily a completed garden pool. Check excavation, disposal, base slab, backfill, crane, connections and landscaping. These depend heavily on the site.

Two Swiss examples checked in October 2026 illustrate the scope difference. A 6 × 3 × 1.5 m PP pool with equipment, heat pump, cover and specified installation starts at CHF 51,900 excluding VAT, without excavation, slab, backfill and other construction work.

Another 7 × 3.5 × 1.5 m PP package costs CHF 64,322 including VAT and includes excavation and backfill. The package applies within 35 km of Embrach. Electricity, fresh-water and sewer connections plus other specified work are excluded. These examples are neither a market average nor a reliable price range for your site.

  • Pool and equipment. Specify material, steps, filter, pipes, controls and installation.
  • Construction and connections. Separate excavation, disposal, foundations, lifting, electricity, water and drainage.
  • Surroundings and handover. Account for edging, patio, reinstatement, safety measures, commissioning and instruction.

Choose dimensions around use

Length, width and depth serve different purposes. Swimming lengths differs from simply cooling down. Steps and seats reduce the clear water area, so an outside measurement does not necessarily describe the usable swimming length.

Natural pools and swimming ponds also need room for their treatment system. No fixed swimming-to-planted-area ratio suits every design. A family pool, shared residential pool and hotel pool also require different operating and safety arrangements.

Check access and ground conditions early

A prefabricated shell must not only fit in the finished garden. Delivery and lifting need an appropriate route or a planned lifting solution. Excavators, temporary storage and materials also take up space.

Slopes, rock, groundwater, buried services and nearby buildings can change the project. An existing patio or slab is not automatically suitable for the load. Foundations, drainage and construction sequence need site-specific assessment; a generic slab thickness from a guide is not a design for your project.

Coordinate equipment, heating and operation

Filtration, circulation and treatment must suit volume, use and construction. Salt electrolysis produces chlorine and is not a chlorine-free option. Biological systems work differently but still require maintenance and suitable operating conditions.

Plan accessible equipment space, pipe routes and winter preparation. Indoor pools also need humidity and room-climate control. Heating changes energy use, season length and cover requirements. Sizing and any energy or noise restrictions should be addressed by the designers.

Running costs include energy, water, treatment, servicing and later replacement parts. Automation is not maintenance-free. Ask for consumption assumptions based on your use instead of relying on a generic yearly sum.

Clarify permission before ordering

Ask the municipality what procedure applies to the location, construction, cover and heating. A size threshold from another canton does not approve your project. A simplified process does not automatically mean no permission is needed.

Heated outdoor pools require checking the applicable local energy rules. Agree who prepares drawings, applications and supporting evidence. Existing documents help but are not a prerequisite for an initial quote request.

Build safety into the design

Access to the water must suit the users. Discuss appropriate access protection and, where needed, a purpose-designed safety cover. A thermal blanket or any ordinary roller cover does not automatically provide that protection.

Slip-resistant transitions, usable entry steps, safe fittings and visibility of the pool also belong in the plan. Safety products do not replace supervision of young children. Shared or public use needs the additional requirements considered by the professionals.

From quotation to handover

A realistic schedule includes design, approvals, delivery, construction and commissioning. Stating only the shell installation time understates the whole project. Weather, ground conditions and deliveries can affect the sequence.

  1. Concept and site visit. Agree use, dimensions, location and scope.
  2. Quote and responsibilities. Clarify self-performed work, interfaces between firms and possible extra costs in writing.
  3. Construction and checks. Coordinate work and connections against the approved design.
  4. Handover. Have watertightness and operation checked, receive documents and learn operation, care and winter procedures.

Frequently asked questions

Does a complete pool package include everything?

Only its stated scope counts. Excavation, slab, crane, connections or landscaping can still be excluded. Ask for responsibilities to be set out in writing.

Can I have a pool I already bought installed?

Yes. Make, model and documents help the contractor assess installation and preparation. Not every contractor works with every third-party system.

Can I request preparation work only?

Yes. Specify excavation, slab, backfill or landscaping. The work must match the design and installation instructions for that pool.

Do I need to know the final depth already?

No. It can remain open at the early enquiry stage. Depth is agreed with use, structure and safety in mind.

Can a natural pool be maintenance-free?

No. Biological treatment changes the care rather than removing it. Filters, surfaces and any planted zones need maintenance suited to the system.
