Plan an outdoor space that works beyond its appearance
The visible finish is only part of a patio or deck. Available height, drainage, supporting structure and connections affect comfort and durability. Start by describing the location and work required; the contractor can design the technical solution.
Ground-level patio, raised deck or roof terrace?
On natural ground, the supporting layers must suit the soil and intended use. Existing paving may provide a base, but its condition and levels need checking. An extension also needs a planned connection to the original area: differing settlement can create a step between them.
Raised decks require load-bearing components and, where appropriate, fall protection. Balconies and flat roofs also require checks of permissible loads and waterproofing. A new surface should not simply be placed over an unassessed roof.
Which surface suits the way you will use it?
Compare physical samples, preferably wet as well as dry. Colour alone says little about grip, maintenance or barefoot comfort. An unshaded south-facing area faces different conditions from a sheltered seating space.
| Surface | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|
| Timber decking | Species, grade, natural colour changes and desired surface maintenance. |
| Composite / WPC decking | Product system, heating in sunshine, movement gaps and compatible fixings. |
| Concrete / natural stone slabs | Weight, finish, frost resistance and suitability for the proposed installation. |
| Outdoor porcelain slabs | Approval for the selected support, breakage resistance and safe edge and step details. |
Design the support and water route together
Decking needs to dry after getting wet. Closed perimeter panels, accumulated leaves or unsuitable supports can trap moisture. Gaps, fixings and falls must therefore match the actual material and system. A single standard value does not suit every board or paving assembly.
Open joints do not replace drainage beneath the surface. Rainwater needs a continuous route without collecting against the building or a doorway. Ask how drains will remain accessible and which parts can be lifted for cleaning or repair.
A roof terrace needs checks of the whole assembly
The finish, supports, protective layer, waterproofing and structure beneath must be considered together. Large planters or a hot tub can impose substantial additional loads. Mention these plans before pricing, even if the equipment will arrive later.
Raising the floor changes doorway details and the effective height of guarding. A low threshold is therefore more than a paving choice. Drainage, protection against water entry and safe use need a coordinated solution. Check building procedures with the authority responsible for the particular location.
Surface replacement or deeper renovation?
Soft boards, rocking slabs or standing water can indicate a problem below the finish. Have the cause assessed. An existing substructure can only be reused if its condition, strength and layout suit the replacement system.
Agree how hidden defects discovered during removal will be handled. Clear assumptions and approval of additional work are useful. They prevent a modest surface replacement from turning into an extensive renovation without an explicit decision.
What determines patio construction costs?
A decking price per square metre is not the price of a finished patio. Removal, disposal, foundations, supporting structure, surface, installation and connections may be included or priced separately. Small areas can cost more per square metre because travel and site setup are still needed.
The Swiss prices reviewed differ in materials, supporting structures, site works and VAT treatment. They do not support one reliable universal market rate. Compare the same area and specification, and ask contractors to add any missing items.
- Quantities. Separate usable area from material ordered: cuts and spare pieces may increase the quantity needed.
- Additional work. Itemise steps, guarding, drainage, difficult transport and disposal.
- Price basis. Clarify VAT, fixed charges, quantity assumptions and the conditions for additional work.
Prepare a useful request
A few practical details are enough to get started. You do not need to carry out technical surveying or structural design yourself.
- Define the work. State new construction, extension, renewal or repair and give the approximate area affected.
- Describe the location. Garden, raised structure, roof or balcony; provide height or floor level where relevant.
- Outline preferences. Mention surfaces, steps, guarding and unusual uses. The final material can remain a discussion point.
- Agree responsibilities. Before ordering, settle levels, drainage, removals and the boundaries between different contractors’ work.
Consider maintenance and safety before buying
Even low-maintenance surfaces need cleaning. Leaves, dirt and growth can hold moisture and make the surface slippery. Ask for care instructions for the selected product; harsh cleaners or unsuitable pressure washing can damage it.
Timber changes colour outdoors. A weathered patina may be welcome; retaining the original colour requires a maintenance plan. Also check loose parts, raised edges and drainage outlets. A material name alone cannot establish a guaranteed service life.
Frequently asked questions
Can a new deck be built over existing paving?
Sometimes, after checking strength, condition, available height and drainage. Doorway connections and fixings must also suit the new assembly.
Is composite decking maintenance-free?
No. It generally does not need timber oil treatment, but cleaning, ventilation and clear drainage remain important. Follow the instructions for the particular product.
Which area should I enter for repairs or an extension?
Enter the area to be worked on. For an extension, that means the additional area. The optional message can describe its connection to the existing section.
Do I need every permission before requesting quotes?
Not for an initial enquiry. Any necessary permissions or consents must nevertheless be clarified before work starts. A raised structure requires different assessment from a simple surface replacement.
Can I buy the materials myself?
Yes, if the contractor agrees to install them. Before buying, confirm compatibility, quantities, accessories, delivery and responsibility for missing or damaged parts.
