Which patio cover suits your outdoor space?
A cover should suit the terrace and how you use it. Are you mainly looking for shade, a dry seat in the rain or the option of enclosing the sides later? That choice affects the roof, fixings, equipment and costs more than the colour of the frame.
Glass, louvres and fabric serve different purposes
A fixed glass roof admits light and protects against precipitation from above. Additional shading may still be needed against direct sunlight. Polycarbonate is another light-transmitting roof covering; transparency and light diffusion depend on the sheet.
Louvred roofs adjust light and ventilation through movable blades. Fabric systems may open or retract depending on their design. Suitability for rain and operation in wind or snow are model-specific. A general claim of weather resistance does not replace clear operating limits.
| Option | Check before choosing |
|---|---|
| Fixed glass roof | Daylight, shading, cleaning and verified load capacity |
| Polycarbonate roof | Sheet type, light transmission, fixings and drainage |
| Louvred roof | Opening function, drainage and use in frost, wind and snow |
| Fabric cover | Rain suitability, required pitch and retraction conditions |
Plan width, projection and clear routes
Width and projection tell you more than area alone. A 5 × 4 metre roof and a 10 × 2 metre roof each cover 20 square metres, but they do not need the same structure. Approximate dimensions are enough for the enquiry; final construction needs an on-site survey.
Also consider where posts can stand and whether doors, awnings or eaves obstruct the installation. A generous roof is less useful if a post blocks the usual route. On a balcony or roof terrace, structural capacity, anchoring and waterproofing need specific assessment.
Do not assume walls and foundations are suitable
An attached cover needs an appropriate load-bearing connection. External insulation or facade cladding is not the same as a structural wall. Fixings must transfer loads while preserving the building envelope.
A freestanding structure relies on its own posts and foundations. Existing patio slabs do not prove that suitable foundations lie below. Have buried services and the destination of roof water checked as well. An integrated gutter alone does not resolve where the water goes next.
Add shading and sides to suit actual use
A transparent roof can preserve light on the patio and in adjoining rooms while still needing sun protection. Orientation and the sun’s path determine whether overhead or side shading matters most. Lighting and motorised elements also need a suitable electrical supply.
Vertical screens and sliding glazing change wind protection, ventilation and use. They cannot automatically be retrofitted to every system. An enclosed but uninsulated patio cover does not become a heated living conservatory simply by adding sides. If future expansion is planned, check compatibility when choosing the system.
Include weather exposure and permissions in the plan
The structure must suit the site. Snow loads, wind exposure, snow sliding from the house roof and anchoring cannot be established from general advertising. Ask for the evidence and operating limits that apply to the specific proposed configuration.
Movable roofs may require a particular winter position or restricted operation in frost. Sensors do not replace the manual. Permission and boundary distances depend on the location and project, so check with the municipality before ordering. Calling a covered structure a pergola does not automatically make it exempt.
Distinguish a delivered kit from a finished installation
Area is only one price factor: spans, fixings, foundations, roofing, shading and side panels can change the cost substantially. A delivered kit is therefore not directly comparable to an installed bespoke cover. Public guide prices do not always include the same preparation or VAT.
Identify surveying and design, materials, delivery, installation and connections separately. For owner-purchased materials, agree whether the kit is complete and suitable for the site. Repairs depend on the cause: a leaking gutter is a different job from broken glass or a failed louvre motor.
- Main structure. Specify dimensions, roof system, posts, fixings and required foundations.
- Equipment. Explicitly include shading, side panels, lighting, controls and electrical work.
- Completion work. Account for rainwater disposal, waterproofing, dismantling, waste removal and reinstating the patio surface.
Have operation and maintenance explained
Check drainage, moving parts, shading, controls and agreed connections together. Ask how to manage the system in wind, rain, frost and a power cut. The correct manual and replacement-part information should be included at handover.
Gutters, outlets, seals and mechanisms need care appropriate to the system. Not every roof can be walked on; cleaning and maintenance must be possible safely. For repairs, make and model help the contractor plan suitable parts and expertise, but you do not need to assemble technical documents for the initial enquiry.
Frequently asked questions
Does a louvred roof always keep snow out?
No universal assumption is safe. Models differ in load capacity and prescribed winter position. Some require the louvres to be opened before snow. The design and instructions for the particular roof determine its use.
Is my existing patio a sufficient foundation?
Not automatically. Slabs or decking do not demonstrate suitable load-bearing foundations. The contractor needs to assess the ground construction and fixings.
Does a glass roof need extra shading?
It depends on the glass, orientation and intended use. A transparent roof stops rain but may admit direct sunlight. Shading should therefore be considered during design.
Can side panels be added later?
Systems designed for this can be extended, subject to checking compatibility, loads, connections and permissions. Not every roof can accept later glazing without alterations.
Which dimensions should I provide?
Approximate width and projection of the desired or existing cover. Exact height, connections and anchoring are checked on site for the final quote.
