Choose cover suited to the animal and risk
Pet insurance helps with the financial consequences of agreed events. It does not automatically pay every veterinary invoice or replace preventive care or owner liability insurance. Compare the actual protection per animal, your own contribution and when cover becomes effective.
The animal and its daily life determine the policy
For dogs and cats, the main aim is often to cover veterinary expenses after an accident or illness. Horses may also need separate death or disability cover. Other species, breeding, commercial keeping and sporting use are not automatically included. Describe each animal’s species, breed, age and use. With several animals, confirm eligibility, benefits and limits for each one.
Distinguish accidents, illness and surgery
Accident insurance does not automatically include illness. Surgery cover may be limited to certain operations and related costs. Compare diagnostics, medication, hospital treatment and follow-up care alongside preventive care, dentistry and chronic conditions. Check which causes and treatments the particular contract includes. A package name does not replace checking exclusions and the annual benefit limit.
| Desired protection | Check in the quote |
|---|---|
| Accident / illness | Causes, treatment and exclusions |
| Surgery | Procedure, diagnostics and follow-up |
| Horse value | Death and disability separately |
Check age, pre-existing conditions and waiting periods
Entry age, health assessment and waiting periods vary by animal and product. Taking out a new policy does not by itself cover problems already known. Congenital or hereditary conditions may also have specific terms. Confirm acceptance and the start date in writing before ending existing cover. Any medical documents belong in the insurer’s later assessment if needed; the initial enquiry requests no diagnoses or veterinary reports.
Compare fixed excess and percentage share separately
A fixed excess and a percentage contribution may both apply. Check whether the excess is per insurance year or claim and what amount the percentage applies to. There may also be limits per animal, treatment or year, plus excluded costs. Ask for a worked veterinary invoice using the quoted terms. The same annual premium can therefore leave different out-of-pocket costs after treatment.
Veterinary costs are separate from owner liability
Damage your animal causes to another person or their property concerns liability. Treatment of your own animal falls under the agreed illness or accident cover. Check existing personal liability insurance, covered keepers, species and commercial use, as well as cantonal dog-keeping requirements. A veterinary expense policy does not automatically satisfy a liability insurance requirement. Cover abroad and care by third parties must also fit the actual situation.
Compare costs for equivalent benefits
The premium depends on factors including species, age, product and chosen contribution. Compare quotes using the same animal details, benefits and limits. Horse value cover depends on the agreed value and actual use; it does not replace veterinary expense cover. Check payment surcharges, changes as the animal ages and cancellation terms. The table is a comparison model, not a general price list.
| Cost component | Comparison basis |
|---|---|
| Premium | Same animals, benefits and term |
| Own contribution | Fixed excess plus agreed percentage |
| Remaining costs | Exclusions and costs above limits |
Checklist for a comparable enquiry
Prepare the number, species, breed, age and use of the animals, plus desired cover. Note existing insurance, the desired start date and your home location. Compare entry age, waiting periods, exclusions, fixed excess, percentage share and annual limit per animal. For horses, also check value, death and disability benefits. Microchip and policy numbers and health documents are not needed for this initial enquiry.
From enquiry to confirmed cover
First describe your animals and desired protection. Then compare written quotes and have unclear benefits confirmed for your situation. The insurer may request more information for acceptance; provide it through the designated process. Check the start date and waiting period before changing an existing policy. The enquiry does not conclude an insurance contract and is not a channel for urgent treatment or claims.
Frequently asked questions
Can every species be insured?
Not under every policy. Dogs, cats, horses and other species may require different products and eligibility terms. Have the particular species confirmed.
Is surgery always covered?
No. The insured cause, procedure, exclusions, waiting period and limits matter. Check diagnostics and follow-up too.
How do the excess and percentage share interact?
The policy sets this out. Check the fixed excess per year or claim and the percentage calculation using a specific invoice.
Does a new policy cover known problems?
Not automatically. Pre-existing conditions and known events may be excluded. Clarify acceptance and effective start individually.
Does pet insurance replace liability insurance?
Veterinary expenses and damage to third parties are different risks. Check existing liability insurance and any cantonal requirements separately.
Must I enter veterinary reports or microchip numbers here?
No. The first enquiry needs animal details and desired protection. The insurer may request documents during later assessment.
