Personal liability insurance: compare cover and premiums

Personal liability concerns insured claims by others against you. It checks whether demands are justified and defends against unjustified claims under the agreement. Covered people, risks and amounts are defined by the policy.

Distinguish damage and liability

Not every loss you are involved in automatically creates liability or an insurance payment. Cause, liability and contractual cover require assessment. Defence against unjustified demands is therefore a useful part of protection.

Your own belongings and losses between co-insured people do not simply receive the same treatment as third-party property. Your broken laptop and a neighbour’s claim need different assessments.

Define the insured people

Individual, couple, family or shared flat: the contractual group matters. Check that the intended people are included and how to report leaving home, living together or other changes.

For children, also discuss cases without legal liability and any relevant limits. Do not assume parents automatically owe compensation for every loss a child causes or that every family policy pays regardless of circumstances.

Separate tenant damage from wear

An accidentally cracked basin differs from normal wear. Alterations, pet damage and lost keys may have their own conditions. Check these areas before handing back a rental home.

For owner-occupied property, clarify included building liability. Let property or larger portfolios are not automatically covered in the same way.

Housing situationWhat to clarify
Rental homeWhich tenant damage and deductibles apply?
PetsAre third-party property and damage to the rental home treated alike?
KeysAre lock changes and locksmith services insured?
OwnershipWhich personally occupied buildings or flats are included?

Check particular activities explicitly

Occasionally driving a borrowed car, hiring vehicles or riding entrusted horses can raise additional questions. Compare frequency, permitted use, loss types and limits. Occasional-use cover does not automatically extend to regular driving or every rental car.

Side activities and professional work also need clear boundaries. Small activities may be covered to a limited extent under particular terms. This does not establish a universal turnover threshold; appropriate business cover needs assessment.

Assess the limit and deductible together

The limit caps agreed benefits. Bodily injury can have much greater consequences than replacing an object. Ask for offered amounts and sublimits to be explained.

A higher deductible may change the premium while increasing your share. Compare special rules for tenant damage and extensions as well. One number does not describe the entire protection.

Compare understandable proposals

People, requested limit, housing, risks and deductibles can affect premiums. A general low price is not a reliable indication for your household.

Start with a few details

Household, housing and desired risks suffice initially. You need not determine the appropriate limit already; a recommendation can form part of the comparison. Names of every insured person and full policy records are not needed for this first request.

People and risks must be specifically agreed before cover is concluded. For an existing loss, contact the responsible insurer; a new request does not provide retrospective protection. A comparison does not replace binding acceptance by the insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Is liability the same as contents cover?

No. Contents concerns your insured belongings; liability concerns insured third-party demands against you.

Is every demand paid?

No. Liability and cover are checked; unjustified demands may be defended.

Is everyone at home automatically covered?

That depends on the policy. Check the insured group and report changes.

Is normal wear in a rented home covered?

Normal wear differs from an insured loss. Pets, keys and alterations may have specific rules.

Are borrowed cars automatically included?

Terms vary. Use, frequency and vehicle type must match agreed protection.

Must I choose a limit before requesting?

No. You can request a reasoned recommendation, then compare limits, deductibles and premiums.
