Business liability insurance: risks, cover and premiums
Business liability depends on what your firm actually does. It concerns insured third-party compensation claims and defence against unjustified claims. Damage to your own assets, purely financial losses and correcting your own work are separate issues.
Activity determines protection
Describe services and products precisely. “Trades” does not show whether the firm only installs equipment or works on structural elements. “Consultancy” does not explain whether mistakes can cause direct financial losses. These distinctions affect suitable cover.
Work away from your premises, imported products, subcontractors and export markets also matter. A broad sector label does not ensure every new activity is included.
Distinguish types of loss
Bodily injury, property damage and their financial consequences are typical business liability subjects. Pure financial losses without preceding injury or property damage may require other cover or an extension.
| Loss type | What the quote should clarify |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury | A third party is injured: assess activity and liability. |
| Property damage | Someone else’s assets are damaged: check cover and exclusions. |
| Consequential financial loss | Financial consequence of insured injury or property damage. |
| Pure financial loss | Loss without preceding injury or property damage; further assessment needed. |
Correcting work is not the same as liability
Rectifying defective work is not automatically an insured liability claim. Property being worked on, recall expenses and additional contractual liabilities may also be limited or excluded. Ask for these areas to be assessed explicitly.
An installation error damaging other property differs from replacing the wrongly fitted component itself. Specific policy cover determines the answer, beyond the label “business liability”.
When to consider professional liability
Advice, design and some specialist professions can cause primarily financial loss. Assess appropriate professional liability or an explicit extension. Ordinary business liability does not automatically cover these cases.
Liability also differs from active legal protection. Defence against an insured liability demand does not mean every contract dispute or unpaid invoice recovery is covered.
Compare premiums for equivalent cover
Activity, turnover, business size, claims history, territories and cover can affect premiums. Sums, deductibles and extensions should therefore be identifiable in each quote. A low price alone says little about protection.
Check limits per claim, per year or per additional risk. Defence costs may affect the available sum. A universal national maximum or standard price is not suitable for every firm.
Relate the proposal to actual risks
Ask for a clear summary and answers to unresolved points before taking out cover. This makes differences in price and protection visible.
| Item | Specific question |
|---|---|
| Activities | Are all declared work and products included? |
| People | Which staff, companies and assistants are covered? |
| Overseas | Which countries, markets and jurisdictions are considered? |
| Extensions | Are worked-on property, pure financial losses or recalls covered? |
| Limits | Which sums, deductibles and exclusions apply? |
Clarify start, switching and changes
A request or quote does not provide cover. Start dates and the time trigger matter when switching; policies may define the relevant event differently. Already known circumstances are not simply covered by buying a new policy.
Report new activities and significant changes for assessment. A clear work description and size information suffice for the first request. Detailed contract or claims documents can be requested later for a specific purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Is business liability compulsory?
There is no uniform requirement for all activities. Professional, cantonal or contractual requirements may demand cover.
Is my personal liability enough?
Professional risks are not automatically covered. Limited side activities depend on the specific policy terms.
Are my own devices covered?
Own losses do not simply fall under business liability. Assess appropriate property or technical cover.
What is pure financial loss?
Financial disadvantage without preceding bodily injury or property damage. Cover needs explicit clarification.
Does the insurer pay every claim?
No. It checks liability and cover, pays justified insured claims and defends against unjustified demands within the agreed scope.
Must I know the insured limit?
No. You can leave this initial need open and request a reasoned recommendation.
