Business insurance: compare protection and premiums
Business insurance is not a universal package. The relevant covers depend on activity, legal structure, employees and assets. A useful comparison therefore starts with your business before focusing on price.
Describe what the business actually does
Two firms in the same sector can have different risks. A trader with a warehouse needs different checks from an intermediary without stock. Describe work at customers’ premises, manufacturing, advice and overseas sales.
Also mention changes: new sites, extra staff or a new service. Existing policies should match these activities, not just the original business name.
Separate obligations and optional protection
Social insurance duties vary with legal structure and employment status. Self-employed people differ from employees of their own AG or GmbH. An employer must also check its duties towards staff. Not everyone automatically falls within every insurance scheme.
Business property, liability, legal protection and cyber cover are distinct from these duties. A profession, canton or contract may impose further requirements. A package does not replace checking them.
Match the cover to the risk
Consider the cause and consequence of each risk. A destroyed device, a customer’s claim and lost revenue are different losses that may require different cover.
| Risk | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Damage to others | Business or professional liability, insured activities and exclusions. |
| Contents and stock | Assets, insured events and settlement basis. |
| Business interruption | Lost earnings and extra costs, agreed trigger and indemnity period. |
| Staff and pensions | Accident, occupational pensions and possible sickness daily allowance. |
| Data or disputes | Assess cyber and legal protection separately. |
Property damage is not the whole loss
After an insured loss, rent and other fixed costs may continue while revenue falls. Replacing damaged property and paying for interruption are different issues. Check whether lost earnings and necessary extra costs are included.
Review triggers, duration, waiting periods and supplier dependencies. A general fall in demand or any failed delivery is not automatically covered. Ask for the specific circumstances to be explained, beyond the label “business interruption”.
Understand premium drivers
Activity, size, insured values, turnover, staff information and claims history can affect pricing depending on the cover. Insured sums, deductibles and extensions also change the comparison. A general annual premium means little without these details.
Compare total annual costs for equivalent benefits. A lower premium can involve larger deductibles or narrower cover. Package savings help only if the included modules are useful.
Give each provider the same basis
Prepare a short overview of activities, staff numbers and approximate values. Estimates help with the first request; final pricing and acceptance may later require precise documents.
| Information | For a fair comparison |
|---|---|
| Activity | Describe identical work, products and markets. |
| Values | Use the same assumptions for contents, stock and turnover. |
| Cover | Compare sums, events, deductibles and extensions. |
| Transition | Clarify start, duration and existing notice periods. |
Allow for future changes
Check how to report recruitment, larger stockholdings and additional sites. Limits and adjustment procedures should be understandable. Decide who informs the insurer of changes.
A request does not conclude a policy. End existing cover only after clarifying the replacement and transition. Detailed staff or contract records should later be exchanged through an appropriate channel.
Frequently asked questions
What does business insurance include?
The term covers various solutions for business risks. Included modules depend on the quote, policy and conditions.
Is it compulsory for every business?
Not as one universal package. Social insurance obligations and any professional or cantonal requirements need separate assessment.
Is cover relevant without employees?
Yes, business risks exist without staff. Your own protection also depends on status and legal structure.
Is liability insurance the same as property cover?
No. Liability concerns third-party claims; property insurance concerns agreed losses to insured assets.
Is every interruption included?
No. Check the triggers, duration and compensation in the offered cover.
Why is there no fixed price?
Activities, values and benefits vary substantially. Comparable quotes provide a more useful price basis.
