Managed security services: coverage, response and costs
Managed security combines technical systems with ongoing provider services. A package may operate devices, investigate alerts or perform certain response actions. These tasks differ. Specify coverage, sources and authority; continuous availability does not guarantee resolution of every incident.
Name the service precisely
Distinguish maintenance, monitoring, investigation and active response. A provider may complement an internal team while other work remains yours. Specify excluded systems.
Ongoing service is not automatically a complete engagement for an existing compromise. Remediation, recovery and detailed forensics may require separate work.
Bind coverage to actual data sources
Specify devices, accounts, email, cloud and network systems. Connecting a service does not automatically supply every required event. Check configuration, data quality and supported interfaces.
| Area | Check coverage |
|---|---|
| Endpoints | Actually onboarded devices and events |
| Accounts / email | Monitored access and relevant alerts |
| Network / cloud | Supported systems and required logs |
| Central event collection | Sources, failures and connector ownership |
Plan onboarding as separate work
Onboarding needs inventory, rights, contacts and rules. Missing agents, licences or sources can delay service. State when agreed coverage actually starts.
Test reporting, assessment and escalation with safe examples. Source outages should be visible too. A created platform or initial report does not prove complete onboarding.
Agree response and escalation
Decide whether the provider advises, acts after approval or has predefined authority. Account blocks and device isolation can interrupt work. Define exceptions and return to operation.
Separate monitoring hours, notification and actual response start. Define priorities and reachable internal contacts out of hours. Desired availability depends on concrete contractual conditions.
Define data handling and internal tasks
Assess collected data, processing location and retention. Limit external rights to required tasks. Confidentiality and sensitive exchange need agreement.
Connectors, own rules, backups or remediation may remain yours. State these responsibilities. Reviews should make coverage, open matters and actual work understandable.
Compare quantities, platform and service
Charges may depend on devices, users, sources, data volumes or capabilities. Compare the same period, coverage and availability. Collecting and retaining logs can add recurring costs.
Separate onboarding, licences, service and special engagements. Clarify quantity changes, false positives, extra investigation and termination. A cheaper fee covering fewer sources is not equivalent.
| Cost item | Define the quote |
|---|---|
| Onboarding | Inventory, connections and acceptance |
| Technology | Licences, platform and collection scope |
| Service | Assessment, investigation and agreed response |
| Data | Collection, storage and retention |
| Extras / exit | Incident help, changes, export and handover |
Prepare comparable quotes and handover
An initial enquiry needs desired engagement, areas, quantities and availability. Name existing systems in the common brief. No credentials, event exports or confidential attack details.
Agree coverage reviews and orderly exit. Access, configuration and documents need handover on change. Reports should state limits rather than substitute for complete security guarantees.
Frequently asked questions
Is managed security the same as a licence?
No. Ongoing work and responsibilities need description. A licence alone does not assess alerts.
Does continuous availability guarantee immediate remediation?
No. Monitoring, notification, response start and remediation are different services and contract terms.
Can existing protection remain?
Depending on supported sources and configuration. Check actual compatibility, rights and data quality.
May the provider isolate devices?
Only within agreed authority. Define permissions, exceptions, contacts and effects beforehand.
Is complete incident remediation included?
Not automatically. Detailed forensics, cleanup and recovery may require separate engagement and charges.
How can data costs be compared?
Specify sources, collection, retention and limits. Platform and managed service costs should be traceable separately.
