Endpoint security: devices, capabilities and costs
Endpoint security protects individual devices and helps detect suspicious activity. Capabilities differ by operating system, product and licence. An installed agent alone does not show that every device is covered and alerts are handled. Compare protection, deployment and operation together.
Inventory device types and versions
Count work computers, servers and mobile devices separately. Identify operating systems, versions and existing protection. Licensing and operation may differ; user counts do not replace a device inventory.
Include remote or rarely connected devices. Clarify responsibility for private or third-party-managed equipment before deploying extensive controls.
Distinguish protection from detection capabilities
Anti-malware, central management and detection with investigation and response have different tasks. Check capabilities on the platforms actually used.
| Capability | Check during selection |
|---|---|
| Anti-malware | Supported devices, updates and configuration |
| Detection and response | Captured events and authorised actions |
| Device control | Desired rules and necessary exceptions |
| Central management | Inventory, state and ownership |
Consider existing protection and applications
Replacement affects agents, policies and integrated safeguards. Multiple active products can conflict. Have coexistence or removal checked for the actual configuration.
Platform support does not mean every version has identical capabilities. Check requirements, permissions and connectivity. Endpoint protection does not replace missing operating-system updates.
Test a representative pilot
Choose representative devices and important applications. Check installation, updates, load, sign-in and management reachability. Document exceptions and rollback before broad rollout.
Acceptance should identify onboarded and missing devices. Test agreed reporting and response routes with safe examples. Real malware or confidential files do not belong in the enquiry.
Define alert handling and approvals
Decide who assesses alerts and which actions are permitted. Isolating a device can interrupt work; approvals, exceptions and return to operation need rules. An alert portal is not itself a managed response service.
Assess collected device data, roles and retention. Include false positives and unreachable devices in operating procedures. Automation does not guarantee every detection or remediation.
Compare licensing and deployment together
Device types, quantities, capabilities, existing licences and support affect costs. Servers or platforms may require separate licensing. Ask for actual included scope rather than a user price alone.
Compare pilot, migration, alerts and support over the same period. Additional investigation, availability and incident remediation need explicit boundaries.
| Cost item | Define quote scope |
|---|---|
| Licensing | Device types, quantities and edition |
| Deployment | Pilot, agent replacement and policies |
| Integration | Management, alerts and interfaces |
| Operation | Updates, false positives and response ownership |
| Additional work | Investigation, availability and handover |
Describe actual needs briefly
State engagement, device types and counts, operating systems and desired capabilities. Use the common brief for existing solutions or important applications. No serial numbers, credentials or event exports are needed initially.
Track missing devices and new versions after deployment. Operation should handle changes and exceptions. Completed rollout is not permanent evidence of complete security.
Frequently asked questions
Is endpoint security the same as antivirus?
Antivirus can be one component. Central management, detection, investigation and response may extend the scope.
Are capabilities identical across operating systems?
No. Platform, version and edition affect capabilities. Check actual support.
Do servers need their own licences?
That depends on the offer. Ask for servers and work devices to be specified with their licensing scope.
Can existing protection remain?
Only after checking coexistence and configuration. Two active agents are not automatically better.
Who handles alerts?
The engagement must define that. A software licence does not automatically include monitored response.
Must I upload logs?
No. Device counts, platforms and a brief scope are enough initially; exchange sensitive evidence securely later.
