Forklifts: compare working requirements and purchase quotes
The right forklift follows the load and working requirements, not just a tonne rating. Racking, routes, ground conditions and energy supply also matter. Compare new and used offers for the same profile, including delivery, battery, charger, attachments and support. Short-term hire and operator training are separate services.
Define the purchase and equipment condition
State the exact vehicle count and whether units share a profile or serve different jobs. New equipment can be configured; a used offer must suit the actual vehicle available. Compare condition, year, documented hours and inclusions. A cheaper unit without suitable battery or attachments is not equivalent to a ready-to-use package.
| Offer | Check particularly |
|---|---|
| New | Configuration, delivery time and full equipment |
| Used | Actual condition, hours, battery and warranty cover |
| Multiple vehicles | Requirements and count for each working profile |
Establish loads and actual capacity requirements
Provide load weight, dimensions and carriers. Load centre, lift height and attachments affect suitability. Nominal capacity does not cover every combination. Have the required capacity confirmed for your goods and the quoted configuration using suitable records. Identify long, uneven or clamp-handled loads explicitly.
Check lift height, clearance and routes together
Storage requires the useful racking height while the truck must still pass doors and aisles. Check lowered height, clearances, turning space and loading operations. Uneven floors, ramps and long routes affect selection. A trial with actual loads and routes may help before a binding order.
Match power and energy supply to operation
Consider indoor and outdoor work, ground, emissions and daily use together. Electric trucks need a suitable battery and charging setup; multiple shifts may differ from occasional use. Combustion equipment requires environment and emissions to be checked. Include existing infrastructure without assuming any socket is suitable or indoor use is unrestricted.
Compare used equipment with verifiable details
Year and hours describe only part of condition. Request details of servicing, defects, tyres, mast, hydraulics and battery. Clarify what refurbishment, inspection and warranty actually cover, including exclusions. Viewing, tests and trials must be agreed. A generic inspected label is not the same quality level for every seller.
Compare full purchase and operating costs
Compare the same count, equipment and usage assumptions. Battery, charger, attachments, transport and instruction may cost extra. Energy, servicing, wear items and downtime matter in operation. The price of one used unit is not an average across forklift classes. Show financing or trade-in separately with clear terms.
| Item | Confirm in the quote |
|---|---|
| Truck | Model, configuration, condition and count |
| Power equipment | Battery, charger and required infrastructure |
| Supply arrangements | Delivery, attachments and instruction |
| Support | Servicing, warranty, exclusions and parts supply |
Organise handover and safe use
At handover, check the quoted configuration, attachments, records and inspection results. Familiarisation does not automatically replace required training. Category R operators must be appropriately trained and instructed at the workplace. The employer also needs to address routes and hazards. Define servicing responsibility and contacts; purchase is not blanket approval for every use.
Frequently asked questions
Is the required tonne rating enough for a quote?
No. Dimensions, load centre, lift height and attachments affect usable capacity.
Must I know the forklift type?
No. Describe loads and routes; suitable equipment can be confirmed from the application.
Are battery and charger always included?
Not automatically. Confirm condition, compatibility and included charging equipment.
Is used equipment always the cheapest option?
Not over the whole usage period. Include condition, energy, repairs and suitable attachments.
Can I request different forklifts together?
Yes. Provide count and requirements for each working profile in one brief list.
Does delivery replace operator training?
No. Equipment handover, training and workplace instruction must be addressed separately.
