Financial management: define the right commission
Financial leadership combines specialist work, management and coordination. Covering a vacancy, recurring part-time leadership and a defined finance project require different tasks and capacity. Specify responsibilities and internal decision makers.
Choose the commission type
Temporary cover prepares a defined transition; recurring leadership covers agreed repeat tasks. A project may change processes or the finance organisation. Establish objectives and boundaries first. The role need not replicate the previous full-time position.
| Commission | Clarification |
|---|---|
| Interim cover | Tasks until handover |
| Recurring leadership | Capacity, deadlines and responsibilities |
| Project | Output and separation from daily operations |
Define authority in writing
Advice, operational leadership and representing the company are different roles. Agree payment approvals, signatures, escalation and cooperation with management or board. External commissioning does not automatically transfer statutory organ duties. Bank access and mandates are established within the regulated engagement.
Prioritise the first tasks
Closures, cash planning, reporting, team leadership and system changes can coincide. One capacity level cannot cover everything. Agree priorities and outputs. Urgent legal or financial obligations need direct attention; a quote enquiry appoints no responsible person.
Align capacity, duration and team
Entity and finance-team counts affect coordination. State defined capacity in exact days per week and temporary duration in weeks. If undecided, seek assessment. Presence, availability and cover during absence belong in the agreement.
Prepare onboarding and access
Onboarding needs an overview of deadlines, systems, processes and responsibilities. Provide confidential finance and staff data selectively and securely. Establish rights, checks and incomplete records. Taking over without a baseline can conceal unfinished work.
Compare fees and additional work
Tasks, capacity and duration define the quote. Separate initial assessment, leadership, projects, travel time and expenses. Agree approval for extra work, extension and early termination. A senior title explains neither deliverables nor price.
| Quote item | Question |
|---|---|
| Capacity | Days, availability and extra work? |
| Tasks | Leadership, operations and projects? |
| Ending | Extension, termination and handover? |
Ensure clear handover
At completion, document open issues, dates, models and responsibilities. Agree knowledge transfer and removal of unnecessary access. The commission can improve structures without guaranteeing funding, profitability or successful restructuring.
Frequently asked questions
Is only temporary cover possible?
No. Recurring part-time and project commissions can also be agreed by scope.
Is financial leadership bookkeeping?
No. Leadership and coordination differ from posting work. Agree the tasks.
Does a CFO take over every signature?
Not automatically. Authority and approvals must be defined.
Must capacity already be defined?
No. The provider can first assess tasks and required capacity.
Is restructuring success guaranteed?
No. Position, decisions and other participants determine possibilities.
Are bank credentials needed in the enquiry?
No. The commission and protected access are established later.
