DJ: Book suitable music, playing time and setup
A DJ selects tracks and builds transitions during the agreed performance. Background music, a dance party and a recorded set need different arrangements. Clear musical direction helps more than an entirely fixed running order.
Describe the desired musical character
Name preferred styles, decades and a few examples. Tracks or genres to avoid help too. Agree how spontaneous requests are handled and who decides at important programme moments.
Listen to samples suited to the commission. A club set, quiet reception and mixed party require different skills. A broad repertoire alone does not guarantee suitable selection.
Separate playing time from attendance
State start, finish and total playing time excluding breaks. Setup, soundcheck, waiting and removal may sit outside it. Describe individual windows for several music blocks.
| Time detail | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Music blocks | Actual DJ playing time and programme transitions. |
| Setup and test | Access, checks and quiet time before admission. |
| Interruptions | Speeches, meals, other acts or room changes. |
| Finish and extension | Agreed closing time and any extra playing time. |
Confirm DJ performance and equipment separately
A DJ can use venue equipment or bring sound and lighting. Name known devices and check suitable interfaces. Controllers, tables, speakers and microphones are not automatically part of every booking.
Agree announcements, hosting or live additions separately. A microphone does not mean the DJ hosts the entire event. Recording or streaming requires separate picture, sound and rights arrangements.
Account for audience and location
Known simultaneous guest numbers help plan sound equipment. Room shape, dance floor, neighbours and desired level matter too. For a set with no audience on site, the number can genuinely be zero.
Indoor and outdoor use differ in power, weather protection and transport. Clarify position, access and venue conditions. Have technical connection and level choices checked by the provider.
Compare the same commission
Compare equivalent musical role, playing time and setup. Preparation and travel may be included differently from devices or extra hours. Unspecified work should remain an open item to clarify.
| Component | Comparable scope |
|---|---|
| DJ performance | Preparation, music blocks and additional tasks. |
| Equipment | Sound, lighting, microphones, accessories and operation. |
| Logistics | Travel, transport, setup, test and removal. |
| Extra time | Waiting, extensions and agreed charging. |
| Responsibilities | Music use, recording and particular venue conditions. |
Clarify music use and site rules
A closed celebration is not automatically private music use in the legal sense. Agree who checks necessary rights and any notifications. Performance fee and music-use licence are different items.
Sound duties depend on the actual event. Streaming or later publishing a recording may involve other rights. A booking does not automatically permit every online use or an unlimited finish.
Record the music brief and booking
Confirm person, date, scope and programme contact. Agree changes, substitution and cancellation in the contract without assuming an always-available replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a finished playlist?
No. A few examples, styles and exclusions are enough initially. Specific tracks and their timing can be agreed afterwards.
Is the sound system included?
The quote must specify it. Existing and supplied equipment need clear scope, connections and operation.
Does setup count as playing time?
Not automatically. Confirm playing time, attendance, setup and removal separately.
Can I request a short performance?
Yes. Give the actual duration wanted. The provider decides availability and their individual offer; no universal minimum playing time is assumed.
Can the DJ host the event?
That is an additional task. Agree language, content, microphone and role instead of inferring it from the booking.
Can I stream the set?
Agree that beforehand. Performance, music recordings and online transmission may involve different rights. A normal booking does not automatically cover everything.
