Custom cakes: Plan portions, decoration and handover
A custom cake combines an agreed recipe with individual decoration. Guests, required portions and visible size are not necessarily equivalent. Comparable quotes also need to cover decorative work, the number of cakes and the handover.
Compare portions rather than diameter alone
Order the portions actually wanted. A main dessert and a varied dessert buffet call for different slice sizes. Height, cutting and construction affect the yield, so cakes of equal diameter can provide different portion counts. Ask how slice sizes are calculated.
| Detail | What it clarifies |
|---|---|
| Number of cakes | One creation or several separate cakes |
| Total portions | Required slices across all cakes |
| Serving context | Main dessert, buffet or small slices |
Give the design a clear focus
Describe the theme, colours and intended effect briefly. A plain finish, a motif, modelled figures and a tiered structure involve different amounts of handwork. Choose the important elements rather than adding every possible decoration.
Clarify edible elements and items to remove before cutting. A decorative tier or hired stand does not automatically add edible portions. Separate assembly, supports and accessories in the quote.
Agree flavours and alternatives
Sponge, filling and covering should work together. State preferred flavours and whether separate cakes need different fillings. Seasonal ingredients or special recipes may affect the work; recipe details can initially be developed together.
Clarify ingredient information
Food information must be available for open sale, with specific rules for allergen information. Discuss alternatives and separate preparation directly with the business. A gluten-free recipe does not mean every bakery can rule out cross-contact.
Practical ingredient requirements are enough initially, without names, diagnoses or medical files. Confirm suitability before ordering and later inform the people serving the cake.
Cooling, transport and assembly
Agree collection, delivery or delivery with assembly. Check packaging, cooling instructions, display time and storage at the venue. For collection, the cake and packaging must fit the vehicle and be transported as agreed; a spare seat alone is not sufficient.
Compare the complete quote
Compare the least expensive suitable overall arrangement for equivalent portions, flavour, quality and design. A basic cake with a plain covering differs from a decorated and assembled creation. Collection also needs to account for transport, cooling and your time.
| Item | Check in the quote |
|---|---|
| Cake | Slice size, recipe and number of cakes |
| Design | Covering, handwork, figures and inscription |
| Handover | Cooling packaging, travel, assembly and waiting |
| Accessories | Hire, deposit, return and cleaning |
Describe the request precisely
State the number of cakes, total portions, date, locality, style, flavour and handover. A short brief can cover colours, allocation and ingredient questions. You need not calculate exact dimensions; an image or budget is not compulsory for the initial comparison.
Prepare the order and serving
Confirm recipe, portions, design, total price and handover time in writing. Clarify amendments, payment, cancellation and hired-item returns. Agree cutting, removal of non-edible elements and storage with the venue before delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Should I specify guests or portions?
The required portions matter for ordering. Explain whether it is the main dessert or part of a buffet so slice sizes can be agreed.
Is every decoration edible?
No. Figures, flowers, toppers and supports may be non-edible. Clarify how they are removed and who handles this.
Does gluten-free mean separate preparation?
Not automatically. Check ingredients and possible cross-contact with the bakery. A general recipe description is not enough.
Can I collect the cake myself?
If the provider offers collection. Agree packaging, vehicle, cooling and timing. Delivery with assembly may suit tall or composite cakes better.
Is the base price the final price?
Only if all requested items are included. Decorations, assembly, delivery and accessories may be extra. Compare the complete written scope.
How far ahead should I order?
It depends on capacity and design work. State the date and check availability and the confirmation deadline; an enquiry does not yet reserve production capacity.
