Choose childminding: care plan and costs
The child is cared for in the childminder’s home. The place needs to fit age, weekly routines and daily travel. Compare both care and organisation: an introduction differs from an arrangement supported by a childminding organisation.
Distinguish the place and contract
Ask whether an organisation handles matching, contracts and ongoing support or whether you arrange care directly. Clarify the contact, billing, insurance and replacement. An introduction alone does not resolve these questions.
Visit the actual care setting and discuss its routines. Other children in care, the childminder’s own children and shared routines affect the group. Flexible care does not mean every time slot is available.
| Model | Clarify before contracting |
|---|---|
| Organisation | Matching, support, contract and billing |
| Direct arrangement | Responsibilities and insurance checks |
| Place search | Available days and suitable group |
Specify numbers and ages
State the exact number of places and age groups. Siblings may need different schedules. Explain differences in one overview. Children’s names and personal documents are unnecessary for the first quote.
Discuss rest, meals, play and mixed ages. Suitability depends on the actual offer and meeting the carer. Ask about experience and support rather than assuming qualifications from a service title.
Plan weekdays and holidays together
Fixed weekdays and daily start and end times help the search. State whether times repeat or vary. Temporary arrangements also need an end date; holiday care may differ from the school week.
Clarify reserved hours, minimum billing, changes and absence. Establish whether used or contracted hours are charged. Agree the childminder’s holidays and unplanned absence arrangements.
Define handovers and school travel
Check travel between home, care and school. Who brings and collects the child? Does the offer include accompaniment? Extra travel needs to fit the schedule and may be billed separately.
Agree handover times and authorised adults privately afterwards. The enquiry needs the desired arrangement without school addresses or children’s names. Discuss late collection and holiday changes in advance.
Discuss meals and settling in
Clarify meals provided and any separate charges. Rules on food brought from home vary. Necessary personal care information should be discussed privately; a first quote does not require diagnoses or medical files.
Plan a meeting and suitable settling-in arrangements. Agree duration, support and payment with the provider. A fixed period will not fit every child. Discuss communication with parents and who helps with questions or difficulties.
Local requirements and responsibilities
Notification, supervision and permission depend on the model and local requirements. Ask which authority is responsible and how the framework was checked. One canton’s rules are not a nationwide assurance for every place.
Subsidies also depend on eligibility and approved services. Check possible support with your municipality or relevant body. Compare the full tariff first; treat a hoped-for reduction as confirmed only once eligibility is established.
Compare the total care cost
Compare the same weekly plan and child numbers. Care, meals, travel and administration may be listed differently. A low hourly rate does not predict the monthly bill if reserved hours and absence are treated differently.
| Cost item | Clarify |
|---|---|
| Time | Reserved hours and absence |
| Meals | Included meals and extras |
| Organisation | Matching, support and billing |
| Starting | Meeting and settling in |
From place search to agreement
Prepare numbers and ages, weekdays, time windows, meals and travel. Enquire with relevant local offers. Compare availability and the full scope before arranging a meeting.
Discuss care, settling in and the contract directly. Confirm the start, booked hours, costs and changes in writing. An enquiry does not reserve a place; the provider must confirm admission.
Frequently asked questions
Is childminding provided at our home?
Childminding normally takes place in the carer’s home. Care at your home is a different model to request explicitly.
Can siblings use different schedules?
Check actual availability. Describe the differences together and record the hours and billing for each place.
Are meals included in the tariff?
It depends on the offer. Ask about included meals, separate charges and rules for food brought from home.
How long does settling in take?
No fixed period suits every child. Agree the approach, support and billing with the childminder.
Is a subsidy automatic?
No. Eligibility, residence and the service’s participation must be checked with the relevant body. A quote does not confirm entitlement.
Does an enquiry reserve a place?
No. Availability, meeting, care and the contract are confirmed directly afterwards.
