Planning and comparing a carport project
A carport should be convenient to use as well as provide a roof. Posts, access and usable height matter just as much as roofing material. A useful quote also makes responsibility for foundations, installation and surrounding work clear.
Plan the space you can actually use
External dimensions do not necessarily equal the clear space between posts. Check door and tailgate opening, and whether bikes or a pushchair need space alongside.
For a campervan, van or roof box, the lowest clear entry height matters. Roof pitch and driveway gradient can affect clearance. Final dimensions should be confirmed on site.
- Single or double. The number of spaces is only a starting point. Vehicle width, post locations and manoeuvring space determine whether each bay works independently.
- Freestanding or attached. An attached design can shelter the route to the house. Wall connections, fixings and the existing facade must be suitable.
- Future use. Consider storage or a larger vehicle early. An extension can require a fresh assessment of the roof, structure and permissions.
Choose the structure and roof together
Timber, steel and aluminium differ in appearance, construction and care. This does not establish a universal order of total costs. Span, finishes and roof build-up also matter.
The roof must suit its location. Snow, wind and the capacity of the whole structure require professional design checks. One load figure in a product listing does not replace them.
| Element | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Timber | Species, construction details for durability and agreed surface treatment |
| Metal | Material, finish, connections and joint protection |
| Roof | Covering, pitch, drainage and condensation management |
| Side panels | Shelter, access and effects on the structure |
| Solar / green roof | Additional loads, roof build-up, maintenance access and trade coordination |
A paved parking area is not a verified foundation
Paving and asphalt describe the surface, not necessarily what supports it. The ground and load-bearing foundation still need checking. Posts and anchors must suit the soil and structure.
Agree who provides excavation, foundations, drainage and surface reinstatement. Foundation positions should follow the agreed structural plan. One standard depth or number of footings cannot suit every site.
Installation access matters too. Long beams and roof panels must reach the site. Even a kit can require extra work when access or working space is restricted.
Check local requirements before ordering
Do not assume that an open-sided shelter is exempt from permission. The procedure depends on the location and project. Ask the municipality about approval, setbacks, height and required documents.
State whether design and application support are included. A neighbour’s agreement or an approved parking space does not automatically cover the new carport. A solar roof and the underlying structure may also require different checks.
Compare prices for the same scope
A kit price is not directly comparable with a fully installed structure. Size, roofing, foundations, delivery and installation conditions can substantially change the total.
A sound quote identifies included work and unresolved items. If the ground has not been checked, this should be an explicit assumption or separate item, rather than an unspoken claim that it is suitable.
- Design and preparation. Survey, drawings, required checks, application support and any dismantling.
- Supply and installation. Structure, roof, fixings, delivery, unloading, assembly and lifting equipment.
- Ground works. Foundations, paving, roof drainage and reinstatement of disturbed areas.
- Equipment and upkeep. Side panels, storage, lighting, charging or solar with clear responsibilities; include VAT and future maintenance.
From kit or design to completed carport
For an existing kit, its model, instructions and supplied components help identify missing parts and preparatory work. Professional assembly does not make an unsuitable kit fit every site.
For a new build, agree requirements and site conditions before design, necessary checks, foundations and assembly. At handover, inspect fixings, drainage and usable clearances together.
For repairs, identify the affected roof, gutter, posts or wall connection. A local leak is a different job from replacing damaged structural components. Start by describing what is visible.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a kit I already bought assembled?
Yes, if an installer accepts the system and it is suitable for the site. The model, supplied parts and foundation plan should be reviewed first.
Does a carport need building permission?
Permission is often required. Check the actual project with the municipality; a single size-based exemption does not apply to every Swiss property.
Can the carport be fixed directly to paving?
The surface alone does not prove that the anchorage is suitable. The ground and foundations must match the structure.
Can solar panels be added later?
Load capacity, roofing, fixings and electrical design need checking. If solar is an option, discuss preparation during the initial design.
How high should a campervan carport be?
Use the actual vehicle including roof equipment and assess clearance along the driveway. A generic standard height is not a substitute for checking the real vehicle and approach.
