Planning business signs: materials, dimensions and installation
A business sign should identify the right place and remain readable at the intended distance. A small entrance plaque and a large facade sign have different requirements. Useful quotes consider location, design, actual dimensions and fixing together.
Define the purpose and location
Explain whether the sign identifies a business, directs visitors to an entrance or labels individual rooms. Unlit panels, raised letters and freestanding signs are different constructions. For an illuminated sign, plan lighting and electrical work separately.
Clarify indoor use, a sheltered outdoor area or a fully exposed facade. A protected entrance faces different conditions from an exposed site. Replacing an existing sign and installing a supplied product are also distinct scopes.
State counts, formats and available space
Give the actual item count and desired width and height. For several formats, one common list can include text, size and quantity per version. The main sign can provide a reference; other dimensions must not silently be assumed identical.
Check the available area, viewing distance and position of doors or windows. Existing dimensions and fixing points help when replacing a sign. Sign dimensions do not replace assessment of the support, access and required clearances on site.
Approve text and design before production
State the company name, logo and necessary additional information. A few clearly arranged details are often easier to read than a completely filled panel. Typeface, contrast and appearance must suit the viewing distance and surface.
An image of a logo is not automatically a production-ready file. Agree data preparation, design, revisions and approval. Check spelling, contact details, orientation and the allocation of different text to individual signs.
Choose suitable materials and finishes
Describe the desired appearance and use conditions instead of guessing a technical panel thickness. Metal, aluminium composite, acrylic and suitable plastic panels have different properties. Printing, applied film and cut-out lettering are different forms of presentation.
Outdoor suitability concerns the complete panel, lettering, protection and fixing. A material name alone guarantees neither a particular lifespan nor adequate attachment to every facade. Agree the actual construction and appropriate care instructions.
| Construction | Clarify for comparison |
|---|---|
| Printed panel | Substrate, finish, format and protection |
| Panel with applied lettering film | Text, colours and later replacement of individual elements |
| Raised letters | Overall width, height, wall spacing and substrate |
| Freestanding sign | Support structure, foundation and requested viewing sides |
| Indoor sign | Reading distance, finish and suitable fixing |
Include fixing and access in the quote
State whether you want supply only or installation as well. Installation requires assessment of the wall construction, existing supports, work area and access. Screws, spacers and adhesive fixing are not freely interchangeable solutions.
Outdoors, loads and temperature-related movement must suit the materials and site. Large or high-mounted signs may need additional preparation and access equipment. The provider should assess fixing and preliminary work; you do not need to provide a structural calculation yourself.
Consider the owner and local permissions
Before production and installation, clarify the responsible owner’s consent and the rules for the actual site. Outdoor advertising, protected buildings or design requirements may need particular permissions. This does not establish a blanket approval for all of Switzerland.
A sign projecting into public space or affecting road visibility may require further checks. Agree who prepares documents, handles applications and pays fees. Approval of the design does not replace competent installation.
Compare complete costs on the same basis
Compare manufacturing, design, fixings, delivery and installation for identical quantities and sizes. Data preparation, removal of old signs, access equipment and permission work may add cost. Unknown delivery charges and your own work are not automatically free.
Choose the cheapest complete solution that meets the quality, use and deadline. A different material or size can be worthwhile, but it must be identified as a different scope. A cheap printed panel without fixing is not equivalent to a fully installed facade sign.
| Cost item | Record in the quote |
|---|---|
| Design | Layout, files, revisions and approval |
| Production | Count, individual sizes, material and presentation |
| Installation | Fixings, substrate, access, travel and preparation |
| Delivery | Packaging, transport and agreed handover location |
| Permissions and existing signs | Application documents, fees and removal of old signs |
From the site description to checked handover
Request a clear scope for the actual site. Confirm dimensions and design after the necessary checks. If you arrange installation yourself, the product and fixing package must suit that method.
- Brief. Describe purpose, site, count, formats, text and existing sign.
- Assessment. Agree materials, substrate, access and necessary permissions.
- Quote and approval. Check and confirm the total price, installation scope and layout.
- Production and handover. Check dimensions, text, finish and agreed fixing.
Information for a useful request
You can make a clear request before choosing the final material. State actual counts, known dimensions and the intended site. Have the remaining technical points assessed specifically.
- Construction. New production, replacement or installation of a supplied sign.
- Sizes and counts. Item count, main format and other different formats.
- Design. Company name, text, logo and current file status.
- Site. Indoor or outdoor use, substrate and access where known.
- Comparison. Complete delivery, fixing, permissions and a suitable date.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the material already?
No. Describe appearance, site and use. The provider should recommend a suitable complete construction.
Can the same sign be used indoors and outdoors?
That depends on the actual material, print and fixing. An indoor version is not automatically suitable for full weather exposure.
Is installation included in the printing price?
Only when explicitly offered. Fixings, travel, access and preparation should be identifiable.
Does a business sign need permission?
Check the rules for the actual site. Outdoor advertising may be subject to local planning and design requirements.
How do I order several different sizes?
Describe formats, text and counts in one common list. The quote should identify each version clearly.
Can an existing sign be reused?
Possibly. Condition, panel, new lettering and existing fixing need inspection; changing the printed face alone does not solve every issue.
