Wire EDM: materials, precision and costs
Wire EDM suits demanding profiles in electrically conductive materials. Geometry, material condition and delivery scope need to match for meaningful quote comparison.
What wire EDM produces
A continuously guided wire removes material through electrical discharges. It creates profiles, slots and openings without a milling cutter’s mechanical cutting pressure. This helps with hard stock and fine geometry. It is still thermal removal, not a blanket guarantee of unchanged surfaces. The supplier must assess geometry, material and requirements together.
Conductivity and material condition matter
Conductive materials include many metals and carbides. Ordinary glass or nonconductive plastic does not automatically qualify. State the grade and known condition, such as already hardened or awaiting treatment. Hardness alone does not exclude the process. Preparation, heat treatment and later work should form a coordinated manufacturing sequence.
Distinguish profiles, cavities and start holes
Wire cutting produces profiles and through-openings. For a closed internal profile, the wire must be threaded; clarify necessary start holes with the supplier. A blind cavity does not become wire-cuttable just because it is small. Another process such as sinker EDM may be needed. Wire size and kerf affect internal radii. Describe the required geometry rather than selecting a wire yourself.
| Task | Include in the enquiry |
|---|---|
| Profile or slot | Dimensions, height and critical radii |
| Internal profile | Through or blind, existing openings |
| Tapered shape | Difference between upper and lower profiles |
Prepare drawings and functional requirements
Dimensioned drawings or CAD with critical tolerances help establish a dependable manufacturing quote. A sketch can start feasibility discussions; missing dimensions are completed before production. Specify datums, fits and later use. For different parts, group geometry, grade, condition and count for each. Matching overall dimensions do not mean matching machining effort.
Agree precision and evidence explicitly
Multiple passes can help achieve the required dimensions and finish. The suitable specification depends on the part. General machine figures are not a commitment for your drawing. Clarify whether delivery includes parts alone or also measurement reports and specified material records. Inspection features and scope should be identifiable. Discuss necessary further work on sensitive functional surfaces before agreeing price.
Compare the complete manufacturing cost
Geometry, workpiece height, count, preparation and required quality affect price. Start holes, preparation, hardening, grinding and inspection may add work. Identify stock procurement or supply, packaging and transport. One company’s minimum order value is not a market-wide rule. Generic part prices would be misleading without drawings and scope.
| Comparison point | Check in the quote |
|---|---|
| Grade and condition | Matching stock and heat treatment |
| Machining | Profile, count, preparation and finishing |
| Inspection | Agreed tolerances and records |
| Total price | Transport, packaging, extra work and VAT |
A clear enquiry without technical barriers
Start with component, dimensions, use and available records. Give an exact count for identical parts and per-part details for different ones. Stock condition and requested inspection records help scope the job. Without finished data, enquire about feasibility and preparation. You do not need to calculate an EDM program or commit to a fixed budget.
Frequently asked questions
Can hardened steel be wire-cut?
Yes, with suitable geometry and conductive material. Agree condition and process sequence with the supplier.
Can plastic be wire-cut?
Ordinary nonconductive plastic is unsuitable. State the material so the firm can assess an appropriate process.
Must I make the start holes?
Not necessarily. Agree who supplies necessary start holes and other preparation.
Can the wire make blind cavities?
Not as a routine profile cut. Depending on shape, assess another process such as sinker EDM.
Is a measurement report always included?
No. Specify required inspection features and records in the quote.
Can I begin without a finished drawing?
Yes, for an initial discussion. Required manufacturing data and agreed tolerances must then be established.
