Wheelchair platform lift: design, installation and costs
A wheelchair platform lift carries a person together with their wheelchair. It may follow a staircase or move vertically between levels. The right solution depends on the wheelchair, approaches, building and use. A seated stairlift requiring a transfer and a platform designed only for goods perform different tasks.
Distinguish stair platforms and vertical lifting platforms
A stair platform follows a guide along the steps. Straight routes, bends and landings require different designs. Depending on the model, the platform folds for parking; remaining space still needs assessment in the building.
A vertical platform connects levels without following the stairs. Lifting height, upper and lower approaches, doors and construction conditions determine its design. An arbitrary home lift or goods lift is not automatically a suitable wheelchair platform.
| Solution | Important assessment points |
|---|---|
| Platform along the stairs | Stair route, guide, parking position and available passages. |
| Vertical wheelchair platform | Height, approach direction, space and required building works. |
| Solution not yet chosen | Professionally compare the whole access route and alternatives. |
Assess the entire route to the destination
The platform alone does not make access usable. Every stop needs suitable space to approach, manoeuvre and continue. Doors, thresholds and the direction when leaving the platform require coordinated assessment.
An individual private adaptation can have different conditions from general access to a publicly used building. Whether a platform is permitted and sufficient is assessed for the specific project; a model’s compliance statement does not replace this assessment.
A ramp or suitable passenger lift may be an alternative. Stair width, escape routes and other users matter too. Coordinate position and system with professionals and responsible authorities rather than assuming feasibility from a generic minimum width.
Match platform size and capacity to the actual wheelchair
Manual and powered wheelchairs can differ in size, weight and manoeuvring needs. Type and known information help with an initial request; unknown technical measurements can be clarified later.
Assessment covers usable platform area, approach and permitted total load. The person, wheelchair and carried items count together. A companion may ride only where the particular installation allows it. An advertised capacity alone does not establish that approach and controls are suitable.
When replacing an existing system, check model, guide and services. Old components cannot freely be combined with a new system. A visit also identifies necessary removal and adaptation works.
Agree controls, assistance and fault procedures
Controls need to be reachable and understandable. Discuss whether independent or assisted use is intended and which control method suits it. Personal diagnoses do not belong in an initial quote request.
Platform, barriers, access closures and stops are assessed as a system. Handover should include practical training and explanation of the intended safety functions. A trial under suitable conditions helps users understand operation.
Clarify what happens during a power cut or fault and who can be contacted. Battery operation, emergency lowering and operating reserves depend on the model. Do not assume every lift has them or override protective functions yourself. Agree maintenance, checks and responsibilities with the specialist.
Check building works, outdoor conditions and installation scope
Fixing substrate, electrical supply, approaches and any foundations or openings need to suit the system. Indoor and outdoor models are not interchangeable. Outside, exposure, drainage and safe approach surfaces matter.
Clarify owner consents, approvals and necessary specialist design early. Advertised rapid installation does not mean every site needs no preparation. Replacement may also require further assessment.
Agree who handles surveying, preparatory construction, electrical connection, fitting and commissioning. Stops and services must be defined before manufacture. You do not need to select a standard classification or provide your own technical safety declaration.
Compare wheelchair platform lift costs as a complete project
Type, route or lifting height, stops, platform, equipment and site determine price. Straight or curved stair platforms are not equivalent to a vertical lifting platform. Equipment price alone does not describe completed access.
One Swiss example lists CHF 13’000–25’000 for a lifting-platform range up to 1.8 m, including VAT, fitting and commissioning. Foundations, electrical work and approvals may be additional. It is not a national average or binding project price.
Compare surveying, delivery, training and preparation, plus servicing and maintenance. Replacement also involves removal, disposal and possible alterations. Unresolved building items need a clear charging basis.
If financial support is needed, clarify responsibility and conditions before ordering. A quote or manufacturer recommendation is not approval to cover costs. Possible assistance requires individual assessment and is not guaranteed for every person or installation.
| Cost category | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Design and equipment | System, stops, platform, equipment and survey. |
| Building works | Fixings, foundations, approaches and required alterations. |
| Electrical and fitting | Supply, connections, delivery, installation and commissioning. |
| Handover | Training, documents and agreed functional checks. |
| Later costs | Maintenance, inspections, fault support and terms. |
| Full scope | VAT, exclusions and handling of additional works. |
Record suitability and services before commissioning
A suitable quote describes the equipment alongside access that can actually be used. Open measurements and checks are resolved before manufacture and installation.
- Route. Identify start, destinations, stop count and intended use.
- Wheelchair. Check known dimensions, loading and controls with the contractor.
- Building. Clarify approaches, passages, fixings and local requirements.
- Scope. Assign preparation, electrical work, fitting and handover clearly.
- Operation. Agree training, faults, maintenance and any funding arrangements.
From initial assessment to use
The process starts with the existing route and actual needs. A model does not need to be chosen before making the first request.
- Describe the situation. State building, levels, wheelchair and known constraints.
- Assess on site. Review approaches, dimensions, controls and suitable systems.
- Agree design and quote. Clarify services, consents, costs and responsibilities.
- Prepare and install. Professionally coordinate building works, services and installation.
- Handover and support. Check operation, explain use and hand over service documents.
Frequently asked questions
How does this differ from a seated stairlift?
A wheelchair platform carries the person with the wheelchair. A seated stairlift requires a transfer. Platform size, approaches, total loading and controls need to suit actual use.
Does a wheelchair platform fit every staircase?
No. Route, space, stops, parking and passages require on-site checks. Other uses and any escape routes matter too. A manufacturer’s generic stair-width claim is not enough to establish suitability for your building.
Can it be installed outdoors?
Suitable models are available. Equipment, fixing, exposure, drainage and approach surfaces need assessment together. An indoor model is not automatically suitable outside.
Do I already need every dimension and weight?
No. Known information helps initially. Technical measurements and permitted loading are clarified with professionals before commissioning. The wheelchair, person and any other permitted loads count together.
Are fitting and building works included?
They must be expressly agreed. Surveying, electrical work, foundations, fitting, commissioning and instruction can be separate items. Replacement also needs to account for removal and alterations.
Will insurance or another body pay?
Possible assistance depends on individual circumstances and the responsible bodies. Clarify conditions and cost approval before ordering if support is necessary. A quote alone does not establish coverage.
