Choose and collect a suitable trailer
A large loading area alone does not make a trailer suitable. Load weight, usable dimensions, loading access and towing vehicle must work together. First describe the transport so offers cover equivalent capacity and hire time.
Match the trailer to the load
Describe the load and any need for weather protection, ramps, a low loading height or tipping. Vehicle transport differs from furniture or loose material. The supplier must confirm suitability for special loads; a payload figure alone is insufficient.
| Transport | Suitability checks |
|---|---|
| Furniture and boxes | Internal dimensions, weather protection, restraint |
| Motorcycle or car | Ramp, track width, clearance, tie-down points |
| Loose material | Weight, sides and unloading |
| Special load | Suitable construction and expressly permitted use |
Separate payload and dimensions
Payload refers to the load carried; total weight includes the trailer itself and its load. The largest objects must also fit through the opening and onto the platform. Give load length, width, height and weight; a concrete list helps for mixed requirements.
Check towing vehicle and licence
A towbar alone does not establish that every combination is permitted. Vehicle-document limits and suitable driving entitlement matter. Have towing capacity, total weights, coupling and electrical connection checked for the actual combination. A marketing label naming a licence category does not replace that check.
For the first quote, provide known technical values or the model and points requiring clarification. Registration, chassis numbers and document copies are unnecessary. Uncertain limits must be resolved before use.
Specify hire period and handover
Give actual hours, including short use. Billing may follow calendar days or other packages. Confirm pickup, delivery and return separately: opening times, instruction and the return area must suit your plan.
Compare the complete hire cost
Compare the same construction, payload and period. Account for travel, accessories and possible extras. Free collection does not remove your own travel and time. Deposit and final hire price are different items.
| Item | Comparison question |
|---|---|
| Hire | Which period is charged? |
| Accessories | Are ramps, straps and adapters included? |
| Handover | Are pickup, delivery and return defined? |
| Damage | Trailer, load and recovery covered separately? |
| Deviations | Late return, cleaning and cancellation agreed? |
Plan loading and accessories
Agree ramp capacity, loading angle, attachment points and restraint equipment. Heavy or non-rolling loads may require help. Check the whole loading plan with the supplier; a suitable trailer does not replace proper load restraint.
Distinguish damage, load and permitted region
Ask in writing what covers trailer damage, transported goods and breakdowns. Connection to the towing vehicle does not mean every loss is insured. Mention foreign travel and special use before booking so authorisation and terms can be checked.
From requirements to documented return
Assemble load, dimensions, weight, towing vehicle, place and timing; then select the trailer and check the combination. At handover, jointly check condition, lights, tyres, coupling and supplied accessories. Document existing damage and record return condition and time.
Frequently asked questions
What load information matters?
Type, total load weight and largest dimensions. For vehicles or machinery, add loading and restraint requirements.
Is a towbar enough?
No. Check the actual combination against vehicle documents, towing limits and licence entitlement. Resolve uncertain values before driving.
Are payload and total weight the same?
No. The trailer’s own weight is added to the load. These figures matter for different checks and must not be confused.
Can I hire for a few hours?
State the hours needed. Some offers still charge calendar days; short use and short billing periods need separate confirmation.
Are straps and ramps included?
Only when listed in the quote. Confirm quantity, suitable ratings and adapter needs; check supplied accessories before leaving.
Does the enquiry need registration or document copies?
No. The model, known technical limits and a brief description are enough initially. Required evidence is checked later through the agreed rental process.
