Planning sauna servicing: equipment, care and costs
Maintaining existing equipment, repairing a fault and replacing a component are different jobs. The sauna type, what you have noticed and any model details already known help a contractor plan an appropriate visit. You do not need to diagnose the fault yourself.
Separate maintenance, repairs and replacement
Maintenance covers the agreed checks and care of existing equipment. A repair addresses a particular defect. Fault-finding and parts may be charged separately, so a maintenance package does not automatically include every repair.
A replacement heater or controller must be compatible with the sauna. Replacing a component is different from building a complete new cabin. Removal, disposal, connection and settings should be assigned explicitly in the quote.
| Requirement | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Maintenance | Checks and care included. |
| Repair | Fault-finding, approval to repair and further visits. |
| Replacement | Compatibility, supply, fitting and old components. |
| Cabin care | Wood, benches, door and intended result. |
Match the service to the equipment
Electric saunas, units with a humidity function, wood-fired heaters and infrared cabins use different equipment. A combined system may also contain water-bearing components. A separate steam room requires its own suitable service.
Occasional home use differs from operation in a hotel or wellness facility. Maintenance needs and suitable visit times depend on use, condition and manufacturer instructions. A fixed annual visit is not a universal rule for every system.
For several cabins, one description can list the different models and requirements. An exact cabin count helps organise the work.
Describe what you have noticed
You might explain that the sauna no longer heats, the control does not respond or the door fails to close properly. A known model reference or an already visible error code is useful. Identifying the faulty component is the professional’s task.
Different causes can produce similar symptoms. Weak heating does not prove that a particular part is broken. Agree whether an assessment visit is needed and how replacement parts or a further visit will be authorised.
Do not open electrical covers or conduct measurements to complete the request. For damaged equipment or unusual operation, ask the contractor what to do before using it again. The portal is not an emergency service.
Choose care suitable for wood and heater stones
Cleaning, drying and surface treatment are separate from electrical repair. A product suitable for a bench is not necessarily suitable for every wall, door or finish. Materials and manufacturer instructions should guide the choice, especially for previously treated surfaces.
Heater stones wear through heat and water cycles. Their type, size, quantity and arrangement depend on the heater. Decorative stones may have specific limitations; appearance alone does not establish compatibility.
An outdoor sauna also has a weather-exposed envelope. Interior wood care does not replace roof, waterproofing or cladding repairs. Mention these problems so the contractor can identify their scope and any additional trades needed.
Agree responsibility for connections and other trades
Mechanical fitting differs from work on fixed electrical connections. An existing power supply does not mean that a replacement heater or controller can be connected without further checks. The contractor must arrange appropriately authorised professionals for the work involved.
For a wood-fired system, heater, connecting flue and chimney need to be considered together. Chimney sweeping and alterations to the exhaust route are not automatically part of general sauna servicing. Have the required work and local responsibilities clarified.
If a warranty may still apply, purchase and previous service records can be useful. Ask about the intended process before arranging an outside repair. This does not guarantee reimbursement or require documents to be uploaded with the first request.
Compare costs for the same service scope
One manufacturer publishes CHF 450 including VAT, travel and labour for maintaining its own privately used saunas. Parts and repairs are excluded. This brand-limited example is not a Swiss average.
Your cost depends on the work, model, condition, parts and access. A low assessment fee is not the total repair price. Clarify charges for unsuccessful fault-finding, sourcing parts and a second visit.
| Cost item | Compare like for like |
|---|---|
| Travel and checks | Fixed charge or time spent; checks included. |
| Labour | Care, fault-finding, repair and adjustment. |
| Materials | Parts, stones and care products. |
| Total | VAT, further visits and disposal. |
Prepare a few useful details
Information already available reduces follow-up questions. Missing technical details should not stop you making a request.
- Equipment. Type, number and known manufacturer or model references.
- Requirement. Desired work or observed problem.
- Access. Location, floor and route to the cabin.
- Use. Private or commercial operation and possible downtime.
- Approval. Agree checks, parts and additional work before execution.
From your request to a suitable service
Parts availability and specialist work may require more than one appointment. The name of a fault alone cannot establish a guaranteed repair time.
- Describe the requirement. Give the type, number, observation and details already known.
- Clarify the scope. Agree assessment, maintenance or repair and responsible trades.
- Approve the quote. Set labour, materials, travel and the process for additional findings.
- Complete the service. Review the work performed and receive suitable care instructions.
Frequently asked questions
How much does sauna servicing cost?
Equipment type, work and parts determine the price. Compare the same scope including travel and VAT. A maintenance fee does not automatically cover fault repairs.
How often should a sauna be serviced?
This depends on use, condition and manufacturer instructions. Intensively used equipment may need a different schedule from an occasional home sauna. Agree a suitable interval with the contractor.
Must I know which part is faulty?
No. Describe what you have noticed. A known model or error code helps, but technical testing is not required.
Can every contractor repair every heater?
Not necessarily. Model experience, parts access and responsibility for electrical work need checking. A replacement must also be compatible with the existing equipment.
Are new heater stones included?
Only when specified in the quote. Type, quantity and fitting must suit the heater. Maintenance, stone replacement and fault repair are separate services.
Does sauna servicing cover a steam room?
A separate steam room uses different equipment and needs its own suitable service. A sauna with a humidity function is another specific equipment type. State what is installed.
