Disposing of rubble: separate materials and compare total costs

Renovation waste is rarely just concrete and bricks. Suitable disposal depends on the actual materials, their quantity and who carries them out to the collection vehicle.

Not all building waste belongs in one skip

Concrete, masonry and roof tiles may be recovered as mineral demolition materials depending on their composition. Wood, plastics, insulation, plaster and other additions change the disposal route. Tiles and ceramics are not accepted everywhere at the clean mixed-rubble rate.

Describe materials separately and ask for acceptance conditions. ‘Clean’ here refers to a defined composition and contamination status, not simply an absence of dust. A mixed load cannot be compared with the rate for a separated fraction.

Plan separation before loading. Agree which materials stay separate and who carries out any sorting. Have unusual or unidentified materials assessed first.

Estimate volume without guessing weight

An approximate volume in cubic metres is enough for an initial request. A pile around two metres long, one metre wide and half a metre high on average occupies roughly one cubic metre. That does not establish its weight or the quantity ultimately billed.

Volume cannot reliably be converted to tonnes without knowing the material. Voids and moisture also matter. Let the operator determine the skip, fill height and permitted load for the waste. A large skip cannot necessarily be filled to the top with heavy materials.

An enquiry might read: “After interior renovation work, approximately 1 m³ of brick and mortar rubble is stored on the second floor, with no lift. Four timber boards are stored separately. The distance from the building entrance to the private parking space is about 15 m. We do not know the weight. Please quote for carrying the materials out, loading and disposal by material type. Please agree with us how to prepare the rubble and whether any further assessment is needed before collection.” Existing photos and material survey results can support the description.

Which disposal costs should you compare?

Compare collection or skip transport, disposal, loading work and hire time together. A per-tonne disposal charge is not a complete price for removing rubble from an upstairs flat.

One verified tariff lists CHF 59 per tonne for clean recyclable mixed rubble, excluding transport and VAT. Two tonnes give CHF 118 net or CHF 127.56 including 8.1% VAT for that charge alone.

Another operator lists CHF 190 net for transporting a 4 m³ skip with two weeks on site; disposal is extra. An energy surcharge may also apply. These examples, checked in October 2026, do not form a combined market-price range.

The first example is from Thurgau and has a minimum acceptance charge of CHF 10 net. For the second, covering Wetzikon and the surrounding area, each additional month or part-month after the included two weeks costs CHF 40 net. Check minimum charges and how extended hire is billed as well as the headline rate. Adding items from different operators does not create a complete quote you can book.

Collection with loading help or a self-filled skip?

Collection with loading help may suit smaller amounts. Floor level, carrying distance, lift and whether rubble is loose or in suitable containers affect the work. Breaking out building elements is a separate job, not automatically included in disposal.

For a skip service, the operator delivers and collects the skip; expressly agree who fills it. Check access, turning space and suitable ground. For public land, clarify permission and fees with the municipality. Collection also needs clear access.

Agree when the rubble will be ready and how long the skip is needed. Extra exchanges or longer hire can affect the total more than a small difference in the disposal rate.

Agree what should be left after collection: is the job simply to remove the specified rubble, pick up loose remains at the loading point or provide construction cleaning afterwards? Removing building dust throughout the flat is a separate scope of work.

Resolve contamination concerns before collection

Work on buildings constructed before 1990 particularly requires checking for asbestos. Appearance and age alone do not prove that a material is uncontaminated. Stop disturbing suspect material and arrange specialist assessment instead of mixing it into ordinary rubble.

Other contaminants may also matter depending on the material. Share any existing findings with the waste operator so acceptance, packaging and destination are appropriate. A general rubble quote is not confirmation that contaminated waste is accepted.

Agree documentation of the accepted quantity and disposal route. Delivery notes, weighbridge tickets and any further required records help reconcile the invoice with the agreed service.

At collection, check together which separated materials and containers are being taken and what will remain. If the contents differ from the quote, ask for the reason and the cost implications before approving extra work. Later, compare the invoice with the records: do the waste type, billed quantity and unit, journeys and hire period match? An initial estimated volume does not replace a weighbridge ticket when the charge is per tonne.

Frequently asked questions

Are tiles and plaster ordinary rubble?

They are building waste, but not every facility accepts them at the same rate as clean concrete or masonry. Name them explicitly and check the operator’s acceptance conditions.

Do I need an exact weight?

Not for the initial request. Approximate quantity and material types allow planning. The operator can explain whether billing uses weight, volume or an agreed fixed price.

Will the company carry rubble out of the building?

If carrying and loading help are included. State the floor and access; a basic skip service does not automatically cover that labour.

What if I cannot identify the material?

Say that it is uncertain. Where contamination is suspected, obtain specialist assessment before disturbing, mixing or removing it as ordinary rubble.
