Public speaking coaching: agree useful practice and feedback

The speaking situation guides the programme: who is listening, what message matters and what should the audience understand or do afterwards? Preparing a specific presentation differs from a general team workshop. Compare actual practice time and the feedback offered. A full seminar day, several individual coaching sessions and a public-course place are different services; their labels alone do not provide a useful comparison.

Define the occasion and objective

Describe the occasion, audience and intended outcome. For an upcoming presentation, give the topic, available speaking time and date. For general development, explain the recurring situations in which you want to speak more clearly.

Separate individual coaching from group practice

Give the exact participant count and say whether they train together or in separate appointments. Three individual one-hour sessions require three trainer hours; a shared one-hour workshop is still one trainer hour with three participants.

Individual coaching can focus on one appearance. A group adds shared exercises and feedback from other participants. Ask how much time is available for each person to speak and whether individual discussions are included.

Work with a clear message and relevant examples

A clear presentation connects an understandable goal with a sequence suited to the audience. Training can help develop the opening, arguments, examples and conclusion. Existing slides are useful, but not essential for every engagement.

Agree whether coaching covers delivery alone or also structure and material review. A short description of the topic and goal is enough for the first quote. You do not need to send confidential presentations, customer details or internal recordings.

Practise voice, body language and questions

Pace, pauses, clear phrasing, eye contact and posture can be explored in relevant exercises. Unexpected questions and short thinking pauses can also be included. Choose the aspects that matter in your actual situation.

Useful feedback describes an observable behaviour and a next practice step. A guaranteed effect on an audience or complete removal of nerves is not a useful comparison standard. Repeated practice and personal application should be part of the plan.

Agree feedback and any recordings

Clarify whether feedback is spoken, written, exercise-based or supported by video analysis. Recording can reveal useful details but is not compulsory in every training format.

If recording is planned, agree its purpose, access, retention and deletion first. An initial request only needs the feedback scope; no personal video or recording of other people is necessary. A follow-up appointment should also be a clearly scoped service.

Align language, location and training medium

Choose the language of the actual appearance and specify online or onsite training. A later presentation may be hybrid even though the training takes place entirely online or in a room. These formats should be distinguished.

For onsite training, the known locality, a suitable practice space and available presentation equipment matter. Online training needs a stable connection and a realistic way to use sound and screen sharing. Access credentials do not belong in the quote request.

Compare teaching time, preparation and extras

Ask for the duration and billing basis. Separate shared training hours from the sum of individual coaching hours. A public-course place may be priced per person, while a company engagement may cover the entire group. The actual quote should make this clear.

Request checklist and process

Note the occasion or recurring situation, audience, objective, exact participants and shared or separate training preference. Add language, format, known locality and timing. For a specific appearance, include topic, speaking duration and preparation stage.

Process: clarify goals, compare practice and feedback scope, agree delivery and terms, train with relevant examples and set the next exercises. Material review, recordings and follow-up are expressly agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare for a specific upcoming speech?

Yes. Give the occasion, audience, topic, available speaking time and date. Specify whether structure, slides and a full rehearsal are required or just particular aspects.

Should a team choose a workshop or individual coaching?

That depends on the goals and appearances. Give the exact count and describe shared and individual tasks. The quote should explain the practice time provided.

Can public speaking coaching take place online?

Yes, when exercises and feedback suit the format. Say whether you are practising room-based, onscreen or camera speaking and which training format you want.

Do my slides need to be finished?

Not necessarily. An outline or topic description may be enough. Check whether content structure and material review are included or need a separate agreement.

Is video analysis compulsory?

No. It can be an agreed method. Its purpose and recording arrangements should be clear; a personal video is unnecessary for the first quote.

Will I automatically receive a recognised certificate?

No. Attendance confirmations and academic modules are different provider-specific offers. If a document matters, confirm its precise type and conditions.
