Piano tuning: compare scope, timing and costs
Tuning adjusts string pitch. Touch, tone character and defective parts can require other work. A useful enquiry therefore gives the instrument, audible changes and preferred date rather than simply requesting “piano service”. You need not take technical measurements yourself.
Specify the instruments and actual count
Say whether the commission covers an upright, a grand or several instruments. Known brand and model help; serial numbers and private purchase records are unnecessary initially. A digital piano without acoustic strings needs a different assessment from ordinary tuning.
Describe condition and previous care
Mention audible detuning, unusual individual notes and the last known tuning. Long disuse, relocation and changed room conditions are useful context. Also mention sticking keys, rattling parts or a broken string: tuning alone does not resolve every fault.
Distinguish tuning from additional work
Ask what is actually included. A brief functional check is not a complete action regulation. If overall pitch has drifted substantially, preliminary tuning or further work may be needed; the technician assesses this at the instrument. Agree scope and any follow-up visits.
| Service | What it addresses |
|---|---|
| Tuning | Pitch and agreement between strings |
| Regulation | Action adjustment and touch |
| Voicing | Work on hammer tone character |
| Repair | Restore a specific faulty part |
Specify a particular pitch only when needed
Ensemble work, concerts or recording may have an agreed reference pitch. Supply a known requirement; ask for advice if it is open. An older instrument’s condition and suitability matter. Do not assume a historic instrument can accept an arbitrary new requirement without assessment.
Clarify location, climate and working conditions
Give the known location and access for the technician. They travel with tools to the instrument; this is not a piano moving job. Provide access and a reasonably quiet working period. Mention building work or other activities that could affect the visit.
Wood and other components respond to their environment. Discuss marked climate changes and recent positioning without treating one maker’s guidance as a universal room rule.
Coordinate timing after a move or before a performance
After relocation, agree placement and timing with the technician. A fixed waiting period does not suit every instrument and room. For a concert, final positioning, available working time and the required check matter. Plan future care around use and condition rather than a blanket guarantee.
Compare equivalent work and travel
A tuning visit and a larger service package have different inclusions. Compare the entire commission for all instruments, including extra visits. Establish travel, tax and open repair items. A low individual price without these details is not a reliable total comparison.
| Item | Establish before booking |
|---|---|
| Main commission | Instruments, tuning and agreed checks |
| Pitch correction | Included, separate or subject to assessment |
| Extra work | Regulation, cleaning, voicing or parts |
| Travel | Location, charges and additional visits |
| Completion | Check the result and agree further care |
Tuning request checklist and process
Note type, known model, exact instrument count, previous care and observed problems. Add location, access, deadline and any actual pitch requirement. Process: describe the need, agree scope and charges, prepare the visit, have the instrument checked and tuned, approve extra work and review the result together.
Frequently asked questions
Must I measure the current pitch?
No. Describe the sound and known history. Measurement and technical assessment belong to the specialist.
Does tuning fix sticking keys?
Not automatically. Mention the problem and separately agree assessment or repair.
Can a long-untuned piano be assessed?
Yes, with condition assessed first. Necessary pitch correction and other work are then agreed.
Is travel always included?
No. Some offers include it for defined areas; others charge separately. Compare the total.
How long should I wait after a move?
Have timing confirmed for the placement, room and instrument. A fixed delay is not a universal rule.
Does a digital piano need the same tuning?
An instrument without acoustic strings does not require this string tuning. Model and problem help identify the appropriate service.
