Preserving a painting: assessment, treatment and quotes
A dirty surface, loose paint and a torn support are different starting points. Suitable treatment follows assessment and an agreed goal. You do not need to choose a method for an initial enquiry: count, known dimensions, visible changes and intended use provide a useful basis.
Separate assessment, conservation and restoration
Assessment establishes materials and condition. Conservation focuses on preservation and stabilisation. Restoration may additionally change readability or appearance. Agree whether the first commission is assessment only, stabilisation or more extensive treatment.
| Need | Clarify scope |
|---|---|
| Understand condition | Examination, findings and treatment proposal. |
| Secure fragile areas | Which paint layers or support areas will be stabilised? |
| Treat surface or losses | Specify cleaning, retouching, goals and limits separately. |
Describe changes without self-diagnosis
Mention flaking paint, tears, distortions, stains and visible dirt. State when the changes became apparent and whether an event is known. Appearance alone does not establish cause. A dark surface is not enough to prescribe a particular cleaning or varnish removal.
State the support and known history
Canvas, wood panels, paper and modern combinations require different checks. Give only known information on technique, previous treatment and storage. Unknown materials can remain open. For several paintings, allocate known dimensions with units, condition and goals to each work.
Agree treatment extent and appearance
Cleaning, consolidation, filling and retouching are not interchangeable price items. Agree treated areas and signs of age to retain. The plan should state limits and open questions. Comparison should not assume that every painting will look new or every intervention will be fully reversible.
Separate framing, expertise and documentation
Frame work, removal, refitting and condition reports may be additional services. Treatment documentation records assessment and intervention; it does not automatically authenticate or value the work. If an expert report is needed for another purpose, agree that purpose separately.
Understand costs through the treatment scope
Size alone does not determine work: fragility, support, losses and previous treatments may matter more. Compare the same services and ask about assessment charges or estimated work. Agree approval and price basis for additional findings before further treatment.
| Item | Comparison question |
|---|---|
| Assessment | Which examination and records are delivered? |
| Treatment | Are stabilisation, cleaning and retouching separately defined? |
| Logistics | Are packing, transport, removal and return included? |
| Additional work | When is additional approval required? |
Consider transport and display conditions
Do not move or clean fragile paintings without agreed handling. Large or fixed works may need on-site assessment. Clarify access, removal, packing and transport responsibility. Future location, light and damp exposure help inform prevention but do not replace individual examination.
Plan assessment, approval and return
Prepare counts, known dimensions, changes and goals. Examination leads to a treatment and cost proposal. Agree treatment of additional findings before it proceeds. At return, discuss completed work, remaining changes and handling. Mention exhibition dates early; feasibility is confirmed by the specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know the painting technique?
No. State what you know and describe visible changes. Assessment can establish materials and construction.
Can I commission assessment only?
Yes. Agree findings, documentation and charges separately from any later treatment.
Is cleaning appropriate for every painting?
That cannot be decided universally. Condition and materials determine whether and how cleaning is appropriate.
Will the painting look new afterwards?
There is no universal promise. Agree readability, signs of age to retain and treatment limits.
Are frame work and authentication included?
Only if agreed. Frame work, authentication and valuation are separate services.
How is transport arranged?
Agree packing, handling, collection or personal handover and responsibilities before moving the work.
