Plan a move around your own needs
Moving services for seniors are not a single fixed package. Some people want transport only, while others need help organising and setting up the new home. The tasks should follow personal preferences.
Define the help without making assumptions
Whether moving to a smaller home, relatives, assisted living or a care home, the person moving should be able to choose what to keep and what to delegate. Age alone does not establish how much assistance is needed.
Choose a contact for appointments and questions. Relatives can support decisions without silently deciding the fate of keepsakes and personal documents. If someone acts on another person’s behalf, clarify the necessary authority with those involved.
| Stage | Possible support |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Measure furniture, select belongings, plan the sequence |
| Moving | Pack, carry, transport and reassemble |
| Settling in | Unpack and arrange familiar belongings |
| Previous home | Agree remaining contents, cleaning and handover separately |
Check the new space before packing
A floor plan and furniture measurements help decide what should come along. When moving into one room, check what furniture is provided and what personal items will fit. Ask the destination about delivery times, available lifts and assembly or fixing conditions.
Clearly distinguish items moving with you, going to relatives, entering storage or being disposed of. Not every decision needs to happen on the same day. Keep important documents, keys and first-day essentials accessible. Clearance needs explicit agreement on the belongings concerned.
Separate moving costs from coordination
The total may cover staff and vehicle, packing, assembly, support and work at the previous home. One published Zurich-area service charges CHF 68 per hour including VAT for move coordination, plus travel. Two hours amount to CHF 136 before travel and external firms’ services. This is not the price of a complete move or a general market recommendation.
Request an itemised scope and establish who invoices which work. In a coordinated package, outside contractors, planning hours and extras should remain understandable. A low transport quote may omit settling-in support or help with property handover.
If funding is difficult, a local social or senior advisory service can assess possible assistance. Seek that advice before making a binding commitment where possible. No particular reimbursement or uniform Swiss subsidy is guaranteed.
Make moving day predictable
Coordinate keys, the team’s arrival and access to the new accommodation. At a residential facility, confirm the delivery window and contact person. Organisational accompaniment can help, but passenger transport or personal care is not automatically included in moving furniture.
Agree which furniture should be assembled and which boxes should be opened first. The bed, clothing and everyday items should be accessible when work finishes. Any connection work or wall fixing needs a clear scope and appropriately qualified responsibility.
Finish tasks at the old home
Moving, clearance and final cleaning are separate jobs. An empty property is not necessarily ready for handover. Allow time for approval of remaining-item disposal and subsequent cleaning before the handover appointment.
Address updates, mail, phone services and insurance also belong in the plan. Administrative help does not replace any required authorisation. An international move adds residence, entry and customs arrangements; settle responsibilities before treating it like an ordinary domestic journey.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a complete package?
No. Request transport alone or selected assistance. The work you delegate and what you arrange yourself should be clearly separated.
Can a relative make the enquiry?
Yes. Agree the person’s wishes, contact and any necessary authority. Medical details are not required for the initial transport enquiry.
What happens to furniture that is not moving?
It can be passed on, stored or disposed of separately. Identify exactly which items are approved for each route; clearance does not automatically mean disposal.
Can the move be international?
Yes, with a company experienced in the route. Provide both countries and towns so transport, customs and support at the destination can be agreed.
