Motorcycle insurance: assess the motorcycle, season and gear
For a motorcycle, liability and casco are only part of the comparison. Seasonal use, riding gear, luggage and trips matter too. Compare quotes that accurately reflect the actual vehicle and use, then examine settlement after a loss.
Choose liability and casco separately
Motor liability is required to register a motorcycle and concerns damage to third parties. Partial and collision casco protect your own motorcycle for agreed events. Exclusions, excess and settlement basis matter; the term comprehensive does not promise cover for every type of damage.
Describe the actual motorcycle
State make, model, year, engine capacity or electric power and significant modifications. Scooters, touring motorcycles and collector vehicles may be assessed differently. A precise model is more useful than a broad class. Clarify terms for leasing, special accessories and commercial use.
Account for the season and registration plates
If you ride for only part of the year, compare winter terms. Depositing plates and a contractual suspension waiver are different arrangements. Ask which theft or storage risks remain covered and what premium adjustment actually applies. Simply not riding does not automatically change the contract.
Distinguish riding gear, luggage and accessories
Helmets, protective jackets and boots are not automatically vehicle accessories. Riding gear and carried belongings may require separate cover. Check events, theft-security requirements, limits and settlement for used items. Describe permanently fitted special equipment as part of the motorcycle.
| Item | What to clarify? |
|---|---|
| Riding gear | Separate cover, events and limit |
| Luggage | Storage and theft conditions |
| Fitted accessories | Declaration and insured vehicle value |
Compare costs for the same protection
Compare annual premiums for identical use, drivers and cover. Consider excesses and payment surcharges separately. Equipment limits and assistance territory matter. A general model category or advertised discount does not replace a personal quote for your motorcycle.
| Comparison item | Same basis |
|---|---|
| Premium | Full year or agreed seasonal arrangement |
| Excess | By liability/casco event and rider group |
| Assistance | Country, return transport and replacement mobility |
Checklist before taking out cover
Check the model, modifications, territory, annual mileage, youngest regular rider, seasonal arrangement, gear and luggage. Clarify breakdown help and return transport for planned trips. Discuss track days, racing and special uses explicitly; doing so does not establish insurability.
Prepare a useful quote enquiry
First describe the motorcycle and use without plates or a policy upload. Then compare written cover and complete terms. Resolve outstanding points and coordinate the start, any cancellation and registration. The enquiry itself is not a contract and does not transmit proof of insurance.
Frequently asked questions
Is my helmet automatically insured?
Not necessarily. Check the riding-gear cover, limits and theft conditions.
Do I automatically save by not riding in winter?
No. Compare agreed seasonal terms and possible plate deposit; a riding break alone does not change the contract.
Can I request a quote for a scooter?
Yes. State the exact model and engine specification. Registration and product categories must fit the vehicle.
Are foreign trips always covered?
It depends on territory and cover. Check liability, casco and assistance for the intended countries.
Must I enter accident or health details?
No. The initial enquiry describes the vehicle and use. Detailed personal or medical documents do not belong in this form.
Can I enquire without choosing casco yet?
Yes. Choose to discuss cover, then decide after comparing risks, excesses and complete terms.
