Life insurance: review protection, saving and contract commitments
Life insurance may protect dependants or other commitments and, depending on the product, build capital. Pure risk cover and savings policies serve different purposes. Compare benefits, terms, costs and the effects of changes as well as monthly premiums. A request replaces neither individual pension advice nor the insurer’s acceptance assessment.
Define the purpose first
Explain whether you mainly need a death benefit, want to combine protection with saving or seek a review of an existing contract. Do not provide dependant names, credit files or account balances. Existing statutory and occupational benefits should later be coordinated with the need; a product label alone cannot establish that need.
Separate risk cover from capital accumulation
Pure risk life insurance focuses on the agreed benefit when the insured event occurs. Combined products include risks and saving; investment performance affects unit-linked components. Ask which amounts are guaranteed, conditional or merely illustrative.
| Variant | Clarify for comparison |
|---|---|
| Pure risk | Insured event, amount and term |
| Insurance with saving | Premium allocation and agreed maturity benefit |
| Unit-linked arrangement | Investment risk, charges and actual guarantees |
Compare insured amounts and terms on the same basis
Once the protection sought is defined, state known insured amounts and terms; undecided values can first be clarified. Level and decreasing death benefits are different offers. Compare the same period and rules for changes or extensions. The initial amount is a comparison request, not a suitability recommendation.
Distinguish restricted and unrestricted pensions
Pillar 3a and unrestricted pillar 3b follow different rules. Eligibility, beneficiaries and access to 3a capital are restricted. A policy must meet applicable conditions; tax effects are not identical for every person or payout. Have access and possible implications checked before making a long commitment.
Review the overall cost effect
Ask for risk premiums, saving, acquisition, administration and any investment charges to be explained separately. Review intermediary remuneration too. Surplus projections and illustrations must not be mistaken for a fixed payout. The lowest monthly payment describes neither every benefit nor the long-term policy value.
| Cost question | Useful information |
|---|---|
| Payments | Premium, payment period and allocation |
| Capital | Guaranteed portion, scenarios and investment costs |
| Remuneration | Fee or commission and scope |
| Changes or exit | Surrender values, deductions and remaining protection |
Understand surrender and paid-up conversion
Early exit may produce a value below the contributions paid. Surrender and making a policy paid-up are different processes and may change risk protection. Request actual values and terms at several dates. Do not end an existing policy before clarifying the consequences and acceptance into any replacement arrangement.
Prepare the quote without sensitive initial records
Briefly describe purpose, type, number of people and known comparison values. No diagnoses, policy numbers or compulsory records are required initially. Age and further information needed for binding premium and risk assessment are collected securely later. Then review acceptance, exclusions, beneficiaries, start dates and contract documents before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Must every life policy also save money?
No. Pure risk cover and capital-building products are different arrangements. Ask about purpose, premium allocation and benefits.
Is a unit-linked payout guaranteed?
Not automatically. Distinguish explicit guarantees from market performance, surpluses and illustrations.
Is pillar 3b always tax-free?
No. Tax effects depend on the product, conditions and circumstances. A blanket tax-free promise is not a reliable comparison basis.
Does cancellation return all my premiums?
Not generally. Check actual surrender values, possible deductions and the effects on protection.
Must I answer medical questions in the initial form?
No. The request describes your needs. Any later risk assessment takes place directly with the insurer through a secure channel.
Can I request only a review of an existing policy?
Yes. Choose contract review. Have benefits, costs and change options explained before cancelling or purchasing another policy.
