Planning laminate: flooring, underlay and junctions
Click laminate can be installed quickly when the conditions are right. But the price on the pack says little about the finished floor. Substrate, use and junctions determine the construction and the work a quotation should include.
Choose laminate for the way the room is used
Bedrooms, entrances and shops place different demands on flooring. The use class describes intended loading. Décor, thickness or a single abrasion rating cannot replace checking the product’s overall suitability.
| Area | Selection consideration |
|---|---|
| Living rooms and bedrooms | Comfort, appearance and suitable underlay |
| Hallway / entrance | Dirt, frequent traffic and durable junctions |
| Kitchen / bathroom | Explicit approval and specified edge details |
| Office / commercial space | Use, castor chairs and required product class |
| Basement / hobby room | Assess moisture and substrate first |
Water-resistant does not mean suitable everywhere
Laminate approved for bathrooms is not automatically suitable for a level-access shower or a room with a floor drain. The precise product, approved applications and specified edge and penetration details matter.
Surface protection replaces neither any required structural waterproofing nor checks for substrate moisture. Basements and previous water damage particularly call for investigation before laying. Placing a sheet over a wet floor is not a universal remediation method.
Address carpet and unevenness first
The substrate must be sufficiently flat, firm, clean and dry for the chosen system. Existing carpet is not a suitable substitute for click-floor underlay: excessive compression can stress connections. Include removal in the calculation early.
For tiles, timber or other existing layers, assess condition and total height. Progressively softer underlay will not correct major unevenness. Removing older coverings or adhesives may need prior material checks. Describe visible defects rather than certifying the substrate yourself.
Consider underlay and moisture protection together
Underlay must suit the connection and loading. Thicker is not automatically better. Excessive movement can stress the joints. If the product has an integrated layer, do not add another without checking.
Moisture protection depends on the substrate. A mineral floor may require a different arrangement from timber construction. Do not simply copy another room’s build-up. Acoustics and heat transfer also need to suit the complete system.
Identify underfloor heating or cooling. With electric heating too, product approval and the actual construction matter. Customers need not calculate technical resistance values; the contractor coordinates these details.
Separate floor area from order quantity
A rectangular room measuring 3.6 × 4.5 metres has 16.2 m² of floor area. Two such rooms total 32.4 m². Area is more useful than a room count without dimensions. Add recesses and excluded sections for each room.
Pack quantities also depend on cutting, pattern and pack coverage. Herringbone needs different planning from straight rows. Have the amount checked, especially when buying yourself. Skirting is measured along walls; its length does not follow directly from floor area.
Which costs belong in the quote?
Published laying rates cover different services: sometimes only fitting, sometimes material or underlay too. Without defined inclusions, a square-metre figure is not a reliable total price. Request a comparable scope for your room.
- Flooring and accessories. Specify product, quantity, underlay, necessary moisture protection and delivery.
- Preparation. Separate removal, disposal, repairs and necessary levelling.
- Laying and junctions. Account for pattern, skirting, profiles, pipes and door adjustments.
- Total amount. Check furniture handling, travel, minimum charges, cleaning and VAT.
| Quote item | Useful comparison question |
|---|---|
| Materials | Which exact product and how many packs are included? |
| Fitting | Does the rate cover the intended pattern and all rooms? |
| Preparation | Which visible or still uncertain tasks are accounted for? |
| Extras | Which work requires your prior approval? |
Remember movement joints and doors
Floating laminate needs the movement allowance required by its system. Perimeter gaps, passages and maximum continuous areas depend on the product. A seemingly neater joint-free transition must not impair performance.
Check the new height at doors and adjoining floors. Fixed furniture must not improperly trap the floating construction. Agree where profiles are needed and how skirting is fixed. These details influence appearance and labour as much as the décor.
Prepare for installation
- Describe the rooms. Give use, area, existing covering and intended material.
- Approve the build-up. Have the substrate checked and agree preparation, accessories and junctions.
- Organise delivery. Provide material in time and observe product-specific storage and acclimatisation instructions.
- Complete handover. Check the surface and junctions. Keep care instructions and some spare boards.
Frequently asked questions
Can laminate be laid over carpet?
Carpet is generally not a suitable substrate for a reliable click system. Include removal, disposal and assessment of the floor beneath in the quote.
Does every laminate need additional underlay?
No. Some products already have an integrated layer. Follow the approved construction; extra soft layers can be detrimental.
Can laminate be installed in a bathroom?
It may be possible with an explicitly suitable product and specified junction details. That does not establish suitability for showers, floor drains or permanent wetness.
Can laminate be sanded later?
Its decorative surface cannot be sanded like a parquet wear layer. Depending on the product, local repair or replacement of affected boards may be possible.
Do I have to select the use class myself?
No. Describe the room and its use so the contractor can suggest a suitable product. If already purchased, the product name and packaging details help.
