Specify hospital cleaning around your operations

A patient room, an office and an operating theatre have different requirements. A useful offer therefore needs more than the building’s total floor area. The contracted areas, type of cleaning and coordination with daily operations are what matter.

Define areas and responsibilities

A contract can cover a ward, a specialist area or part of a wider service. Separate room cleaning from patient care, instrument reprocessing, equipment maintenance, laundry and transport. Cleaning a bed and operating a central bed service are also different tasks.

Routine cleaning differs from discharge cleaning

Routine cleaning follows an agreed schedule. Discharge cleaning covers the specified room and, where agreed, the bed after a patient leaves. Any special disinfection measures depend on the institution’s instructions and the area concerned.

Describe deep cleaning or temporary support separately. Work after isolation, during an outbreak or in specialist areas requires approved procedures; selecting an option in a quote form does not replace that preparation.

For discharge cleaning, the number of rooms actually requiring work each day is more useful than total bed capacity. Peaks and rooms becoming available together also need discussion before appointment.

Work to the hospital’s hygiene requirements

The plan should clearly establish tasks, frequency, authorised materials, responsibilities and records. The infection prevention team and the institution determine the requirements of each area. Not every surface automatically needs the same disinfection.

Staff and their replacements need induction into local procedures. Material compatibility, dilution, contact times, protection and unusual contamination belong in approved work instructions. They should not be improvised through answers in an initial quote request.

A cleaning contract does not make a room sterile. A general quality certificate alone does not establish suitability for every clinical assignment. Ask about comparable work and the proposed induction.

Fit cleaning into an operating hospital

Access, care, examinations and discharges need coordination. Agree who reports a room ready for cleaning, who handles delays and how completion is confirmed. This is especially important when a room is needed again quickly.

A seven-day service does not automatically include round-the-clock availability. Specify hours and separate night, weekend and on-call requirements. Response times need realistic coverage during absences and workload peaks.

  • Responsible contact. Agree an accessible site manager and their replacement for operational questions.
  • Service boundaries. Document responsibility for equipment, linen, consumables and waste routes.
  • Discretion. Keep patient information and access codes out of the public request. Share necessary operational details securely with the appointed company.

Check results and resolve shortcomings

Agree verifiable outcomes and a process for reporting shortcomings. Visual checks identify issues such as residues or missed surfaces. The responsible specialist determines whether additional hygiene testing is appropriate, its methods and assessment criteria. Visually clean does not automatically mean microbiologically tested.

Useful records identify the area, time, responsible role and any issue followed by its correction. Regular reviews help keep the specification aligned with changing occupancy and room uses.

What affects hospital cleaning costs?

The sources reviewed in October 2026 do not provide sufficiently comparable figures for a universal Swiss hospital cleaning rate. Office prices, staff wages or generic hygiene surcharges would not be reliable substitutes. A site-specific calculation is more useful than an invented market range.

Request separate prices for routine work, room turnovers and on-call services. A square-metre rate needs an explicit period and frequency. A discharge-cleaning price requires a defined room, bathroom and bed scope.

From a short request to a workable offer

For the first contact, give the areas, occasion, approximate scale, available instructions and required service hours. Depending on scope, that means floor area and bed spaces or rooms needing discharge cleaning each day. Patient details and full internal plans are unnecessary at this stage.

  1. Agree the scope. Review room lists and tasks together, identifying sensitive areas clearly.
  2. Prepare operations. Use a site visit to agree materials, routes, handovers, training and service boundaries.
  3. Compare equivalent offers. Use matching quantities, intervals and surcharge rules. Clearly authorise changes and additional tasks.

Frequently asked questions

Can just part of a hospital be contracted out?

Yes. A ward, shared areas or a defined specialist area can form a separate contract. Interfaces with the internal team must remain clear.

Is preparing beds automatically included?

No. Room cleaning, cleaning and preparing beds, linen and bed logistics need separate agreement.

Does every area need disinfection?

Requirements depend on the area, its use and the infection prevention team’s instructions. One process for every surface would not be an appropriate basis.

Is the total floor area enough for a quote?

It gives an initial guide, but does not replace room types, frequency and turnover quantities. Many small occupied rooms need different planning from an equally sized empty circulation area.

Can I request short-notice support?

Yes. Specify the period and areas involved. Availability, induction and access to the required instructions must be confirmed before work starts.
