Heating oil delivery: comparing quantity, grade and price
Compare heating oil and delivery together. The same grade may produce a different total depending on quantity, delivery window and access. A request should clarify those conditions. This lets you compare offers for your tank rather than a general market figure without delivery context.
Distinguish ordered quantity from available tank space
Total tank capacity is not the amount still deliverable. Remaining oil and permissible filling affect the volume it can accept. State the known quantity wanted in litres. If you want the tank topped up but the amount is unclear, clarify the order with the supplier.
A top-up request does not guarantee every extra litre is on the vehicle. Differences between agreed and accepted quantities may change terms. Clarify this before ordering rather than using total tank capacity as the delivery quantity.
Choose suitable grade beyond product names
Low-sulphur standard grades, additive products and cold-suitable grades differ. Names vary by supplier. Exposed tanks and pipes have different conditions from a protected tank room. State known system requirements and confirm suitability.
| Comparison point | Clarify |
|---|---|
| Standard grade | Product suitable for the heating system. |
| Additives | Actual properties beyond similar premium names. |
| Cold suitability | Conditions of the tank and feed pipes. |
Distinguish delivery window from fixed appointment
A delivery window and a specific day are different agreements. Short lead times or express requests may add costs. Request confirmation, especially with low stocks. The enquiry itself does not guarantee immediate delivery or a particular time.
Clarify access and the route to the filling connection
The tanker needs suitable access to the intended filling connection. Narrow routes, restricted access or a long hose route belong in the request. Vehicle sizes and hose reach vary; a published standard length is not every company’s promise for every property.
Compare group orders completely
Multiple sites require total quantity and allocation. Additional filling points add work. Confirm quantities, distances, timing and pricing by delivery site. A larger combined volume does not automatically make the complete service cheaper.
Compare price per 100 litres and total
Prices change with markets and offers. Compare equivalent quantities, grades, sites and windows at the same time. A rate per 100 litres is not the complete total: clarify included charges, VAT, delivery and surcharges. We therefore do not give a permanently valid national unit price.
To check the goods subtotal, divide agreed litres by 100 and multiply by the rate per 100 litres. Add only separately charged items in the offer. Check validity and confirmation; another supplier’s terms do not automatically apply.
| Item | Compare |
|---|---|
| Goods | Quantity, grade and pricing unit. |
| Delivery | Included transport, window and filling points. |
| Extra work | Express, fixed date, long routes and difficult access. |
| Total | Charges, VAT, confirmation and payment terms. |
Arrange transport of existing oil
Moving oil from an existing tank elsewhere is not an ordinary fuel purchase. Quantity, collection site, destination and access at both sites determine the job. Clarify oil suitability and work on the old tank. Transport, tank cleaning and removal are separate services.
Frequently asked questions
Must I know the exact quantity?
A known quantity helps. For uncertain top-up needs, request an offer with assessment. Total capacity and available space differ.
Is premium oil identical across suppliers?
No. Additives and names vary. Compare the specific grade and suitability.
Is delivery always included?
According to agreed terms. Check transport, extras, VAT and charges.
Is a group order always cheaper?
No. Compare total volume, allocation and work at each site together.
Can existing oil be transported?
A suitable specialist can assess transport. State quantity, collection and destination; cleaning and dismantling are not automatically included.
How is delivery scheduled?
Agree a delivery window, access and a reachable contact with the supplier. A requested date is not a confirmed appointment. Clarify preparation and extra charges; personal technical work is not needed to make the enquiry.
