Arrange grave care: scope, costs and ongoing support
Grave care calls for reliable attention and respect for personal wishes. Seasonal planting is different from continuous watering and weeding. Separating these services helps you choose suitable support and compare prices meaningfully.
Check which work can be commissioned
Rules depend on the cemetery and grave type. Some maintenance is already organised or assigned to a designated operator. A private instruction does not automatically replace those services or charges.
Name the cemetery and its location in your enquiry. Before work starts, clarify the grave number, responsibilities and permitted planting. Shared graves and urn niches may allow less individual decoration than a planted single grave.
Decide what the care should include
Specify the tasks you want. A package with several visits a year does not necessarily include watering between visits. A new grave or one that has been neglected may need separately priced initial work.
| Service | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Regular maintenance | Weeding, removing spent flowers, trimming and watering according to agreed needs. |
| Seasonal planting | Number of planting changes, plants, clearance and initial watering. |
| Permanent planting | Perennial plants of suitable size; maintenance is still needed. |
| Cleaning and decoration | Headstone cleaning, bowls or arrangements must be expressly included. |
Match planting to the site and available care
Sunlight, shade and the available planting area influence the selection. Preferred colours and flowers can be agreed when arranging the work. Reliable care and water throughout the year are also important.
Permanent planting can be combined with a small seasonal area. For a new grave, timing and layout should account for outstanding work on the memorial. Frost or unsuitable weather may require a planting date to move.
What does grave care cost in Switzerland?
Grave type, area, initial condition, visit frequency and plant changes determine the scope. Do not compare a single autumn planting with an annual care contract. Plants, travel, watering, disposal and special requests should be identifiable in the quote.
The following examples come from published Swiss offers checked in October 2026. They cover different services and are not national average prices. Check VAT treatment and the actual maintenance included separately.
- Compare the same period. Distinguish prices per visit, season and year.
- Separate plants from watering. Initial watering does not cover subsequent dry weeks.
- Price initial work separately. Heavy growth or a change of layout can require extra work before regular maintenance begins.
| Published example | Price and scope |
|---|---|
| One-off autumn planting, urn or child’s grave | CHF 89–134 including VAT, depending on tariff level (2026 list), with preparation, plants, initial watering and transport. |
| Three seasonal plantings per year, urn or child’s grave | CHF 260–300 a year excluding VAT; check ongoing maintenance and extras in the specific offer. |
Make longer-term arrangements clear
Record the start date, tasks and duration. For longer agreements, clarify price changes, cancellation and how prepaid funds are handled. Funding many years of care is different from an annually cancellable maintenance contract.
Agree how changes will be approved, such as new plants, a special arrangement or extra work. Relatives living far away may find a brief update or photograph after agreed visits useful. This reporting should be specifically included.
Treat the memorial and planting as separate tasks
Removing loose leaves from the grave is different from cleaning natural stone and inscriptions. Have the material and its condition assessed before agreeing a cleaning method. A general maintenance quote does not automatically guarantee complete stain removal or risk-free stone cleaning.
Loose parts, cracks or an unstable memorial require attention from the responsible authority or a qualified stone specialist. Those repairs should not be treated implicitly as ordinary horticultural maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I request just one maintenance visit?
Yes. Describe the work and preferred timing. A visit can cover tidying, weeding or seasonal planting where the cemetery permits it.
Does planting include watering?
Initial watering may be part of the planting job. Regular watering afterwards must be expressly agreed. Two or three changes of plants a year do not replace that ongoing care.
Do I need to measure the grave for a quote?
For standard single or urn graves, the type and cemetery provide an initial basis. An approximate maintenance area is useful for family graves or unusual layouts. The contractor can verify the scope on site.
Does the first enquiry need the deceased person’s personal details?
The cemetery, location, grave type and requested tasks are enough to define the initial need. Before carrying out the work, the contractor needs an unambiguous way to identify the grave, such as its number.
