Planning gas inspection: system, responsibilities and costs
Gas inspection examines the installation and appliances included in the agreed work. Scope and the appropriate inspector depend on supply, use and system. An inspection does not automatically include heating maintenance or repairing every defect found.
Which gas inspection do you need?
Periodic safety inspection, checking new or modified installation and assessment before returning to use address different situations. Describe the reason and affected installation. A building connected to the gas network differs from LPG equipment in a vehicle or on a campsite pitch.
An earlier report helps define the scope. Without documents, the appropriate inspection can be established first. Appliance servicing, combustion-emissions checks and a new gas connection are separate tasks that need express agreement.
| Situation | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Building supplied with gas | Installation, affected appliances and responsible supply area. |
| Camping vehicle | LPG installation and the vehicle’s connected appliances. |
| Boat | System, use and inspection competence appropriate to the boat. |
| Campsite or event | Appliances and installation to include at the site. |
| New or changed installation | Work completed and the required inspection. |
| Return to use | Known condition, documents and appropriate assessment before operation. |
The inspector must suit the installation
For buildings, permission to install and permission to inspect are not interchangeable. Cleaning or maintaining a gas appliance also differs from inspecting installation safety. Ask whether the business can cover your installation and the inspection you need.
LPG has different applications and qualifications from network gas in buildings. Choose an inspector appropriate to your system. The responsible supplier or site operator may specify additional procedures and documentation.
Define building installation and appliances together
Heating, hot water, cooking and commercial appliances can belong to the same installation. Work therefore depends on appliance numbers and types as well as access to relevant installation parts. Establish whether the whole relevant installation or a defined part is to be examined.
After changes, identify the work undertaken. The specialist determines the corresponding checks and responsibilities. A boiler-servicing quote does not automatically establish that the installation will be inspected and a suitable report provided. The term gas inspection alone does not establish one nationwide inspection interval.
Scope matters for camping and mobile installations
Cooking, heating and other appliances may share a vehicle’s LPG supply. A campsite pitch may have additional appliances in an awning or outside the vehicle. Agree whether inspection covers only the vehicle or all intended equipment on the pitch.
One regulation used in Swiss camping provides three-year validity for professional LPG inspection certificates where the campsite operator applies that regulation. Its annual user checklist is a different activity. This does not establish the same interval for every building, boat or event. Accepted evidence for the particular use still needs clarification.
Separate inspection, repair and follow-up checks
The report records inspection results and any defects identified. If repair is needed, agree work, responsible specialist and any follow-up inspection separately. A business authorised to inspect is not automatically authorised for every subsequent installation or repair.
For comparison, ask what was examined, what remained outside the work, what is recommended and which documents you receive. Passing inspection within the agreed scope is not an unlimited guarantee for every future use.
Gas smell or suspected escaping gas is not an ordinary quote request. Contact the responsible fault or emergency service from a safe place. Comparing offers does not replace immediate assessment of an urgent situation.
Compare costs for the same inspection scope
System type, appliance numbers, access, travel and documentation affect cost. An inspection-only price does not necessarily include repairs, parts or a second visit. A vehicle inspection also cannot be compared directly with several appliances in a building.
One limited published example in the Basel supply context quotes CHF 125 per gas appliance, excluding VAT, for a safety inspection. No tariff validity date is stated. Travel and additional work need clarifying for the order. This is neither a Swiss average nor a general LPG or camping-inspection price.
| Price item | What to specify for comparison |
|---|---|
| Inspection scope | Installation, appliances and expressly included parts. |
| Travel and access | Location, appointment conditions and necessary access. |
| Documentation | Report, certificate and evidence appropriate to intended use. |
| Defects identified | Agree repairs and materials separately. |
| Follow-up inspection | Need, appointment and charges after correction. |
| Complete price | Clearly identify VAT and open additional work. |
Start with a few known facts
You do not need to choose a technical standard or diagnose system condition. Use, supply and reason allow initial allocation. Existing documents can then be discussed with the business.
- Installation. Identify building, vehicle, boat or other use and known gas supply.
- Scope. State appliances and known numbers, including additional equipment at the site.
- Reason. Distinguish periodic inspection, changes and return to use.
- Organisation. Clarify place, access and preferred timing; keep earlier reports available if you have them.
From request to an understandable result
Before the appointment, the business confirms appropriate scope and its responsibilities. Agreed appliances and installation parts must be accessible. Discuss whether another person or the responsible operator needs to attend.
After inspection, receive the agreed documentation. Necessary corrections and next steps should have clear responsibility. Repair or a further visit is handled separately.
- Identify. Clarify installation type, reason and suitable inspection responsibility.
- Agree. Confirm scope, price items and documentation.
- Inspect. Provide access to agreed appliances and installation parts.
- Receive results. Discuss the report and agree corrections and follow-up inspection if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does gas inspection replace heating maintenance?
No. Maintenance services the appliance; safety inspection examines an agreed installation and appliance scope. Combustion-emissions checking is another task. Specify the service being offered.
Does every gas installation have the same inspection interval?
No. System, use, responsible body and applicable rules matter. Three-year validity in camping does not automatically transfer to buildings, boats and other applications.
Which facts help produce a quote?
Installation type, known gas supply, appliances, reason, location and timing. Actual numbers help where several appliances or installations are involved. Technical documents can still be unavailable at the first request.
Are repairs included in inspection cost?
Not automatically. Defects, materials and follow-up inspection require separate clarification. The inspector is not necessarily responsible for every repair task.
Are appliances in the awning checked?
They need to belong to the scope. An on-pitch inspection under the corresponding camping regulation considers intended appliances there together. Inspecting only the vehicle does not automatically cover the whole pitch.
Can I request quotes without an earlier report?
Yes. Describe the known system and reason. The business clarifies required documents and inspection. A missing report does not require you to carry out your own technical safety assessment.
