Choosing and planning garden irrigation
Every garden has different watering needs. Lawns, hedges and containers require different amounts and methods of delivery. Start with the areas involved, the water source and the support you want, rather than a particular brand or the largest number of sprinklers.
An installation or a watering service?
A new system, an extension and watering while you are away are different commissions. For design without installation, clarify which drawings and materials list you will receive. For installation, construction, adjustment and handover should be expressly included.
If an existing system only needs servicing or repair, its condition and the observed fault matter more than a full redesign. A watering service instead needs information about plants, access and the period of care.
Match irrigation to the planting
Give the area that actually needs watering. A hedge’s length is often more useful than the plot area. For pots, their number and later details of their sizes help define the work. Different areas do not necessarily need watering at the same time.
Sun, shade, soil and recently planted areas change demand. A suitable design groups compatible areas without unnecessarily watering paths, walls or neighbouring land.
| Area | Planning considerations |
|---|---|
| Lawn | Shape, separate areas, obstacles and even water distribution. |
| Borders and vegetables | Plant spacing and targeted delivery to planted areas. |
| Hedges | Length, route and supply along the planting line. |
| Pots and raised beds | Number, size, exposure and individual needs. |
Check the water supply before buying equipment
An existing tap does not guarantee that all the proposed sprinklers can run together. Available flow and pressure must suit the design. The installer can check whether separate circuits need to operate in turn. You do not need to take measurements for an initial enquiry.
Rainwater may require storage, a pump and filters. Supply during prolonged dry weather also needs consideration. Have the drinking-water connection and necessary protection professionally assessed; a simple hose connection is not suitable for every installation.
Distant supply points, paths between areas and changes in level affect pipe routes. Identify known connections and existing services during the later site visit.
Choose controls that make daily use easier
A timer may be enough for a simple installation. Sensors and connected controls are additional options, but do not replace suitable initial settings. Check whether operation is straightforward without a smartphone and which functions need Internet access.
Run times must suit the plants, soil and weather. Automation does not guarantee a particular water saving: a poorly adjusted system can also water unnecessarily. Ask how to change programmes, pause after rain and recognise unusual performance.
How much does garden irrigation cost?
Area alone cannot establish the price of a complete installation. An above-ground line serving a row of plants differs from a retrofitted underground system with several lawns, a new supply and paved areas to open.
Published prices often cover different work: materials alone or supply and installation, with excavation, connections or VAT not always clearly included. Compare an itemised quote for your project rather than an unclear flat price per square metre.
- Separate materials and labour. A kit price is not the price of a fully installed and tested system.
- Check existing components. Establish compatibility and capacity before buying parts for an extension.
- Price a watering service separately. Visit frequency, plants, carrying distances and travel determine the work involved.
| Cost item | Check the scope |
|---|---|
| Design | Survey, sizing, zone plan and materials list. |
| System | Pipes, emitters or sprinklers, valves, filters and controls. |
| Supply | Required connections, protection, pumps or storage. |
| Installation | Trenches, crossings, assembly and reinstating lawns or paving. |
| Operation | Water, electricity where applicable, servicing and winter preparation. |
Include installation and handover
Clarify whether trenches and reinstatement are included. During garden redesign, installation can be coordinated with other excavation. In a finished garden, access and protection of plants and surfaces are particularly important.
Before handover, the system should be checked for leaks and operation, and water distribution adjusted. Ask for the main pipe routes, shut-offs and valves to be documented. This helps with later garden work and repairs.
- Record areas and water supply. Check the plants, spaces and available connections together.
- Define the work. Specify materials, supply, excavation and reinstatement.
- Test and explain operation. Check the circuits, explain programmes and discuss faults.
- Agree seasonal care. Arrange winter preparation and recommissioning separately where needed.
Automatic irrigation still needs attention
Filters, emitters, sprinklers and settings need checking. Components at risk of frost require preparation suitable for the system. Not every installation is drained in the same way; follow its construction and manufacturer’s instructions.
A trial run is useful before a long absence. With a watering service, agree the dates, access, available water and a contact for problems. Automation does not replace an agreed check when something fails.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to measure pressure and flow before enquiring?
No. Start with the available or intended water source. Technical checks are part of the contractor’s subsequent design work.
Can irrigation be added to an existing garden?
Often, yes. Pipe routes, obstacles and reinstatement need consideration. An above-ground solution may also suit some planting.
Can an automatic system use rainwater?
Depending on the design, yes. Storage, filters, pumping and supply during dry periods must suit it. Drinking-water top-up requires professionally designed separation and protection.
Do I have to use an app?
No. Manual and timer-controlled options also exist. Choose useful functions and controls you can comfortably operate.
Can I request a person to water instead of an installation?
Yes. Choose a watering service and provide the plant areas and intended period. Visit frequency and tasks can then be agreed to suit the plants.
