Planning a garden gate that works

A gate needs to work with everyday traffic: pushchairs, bicycles, garden equipment or cars. Appearance alone will not determine the right model. The clear opening, supports, ground conditions and operation all affect the solution and the cost of the installed gate.

Clear opening versus gate dimensions

If posts already exist, first measure the clear distance between their inner faces. This is not necessarily the width of the gate leaf to order: hinges, stops and fitting allowances also take up space. For a new entrance, specify the clear opening you need; the installer should confirm the final ordering dimensions.

Consider what regularly needs to pass through. An opening that suits a wheelbarrow may be too narrow for a ride-on mower. Driveways also need enough room for turning and manoeuvring. Give approximate width and height in your request instead of committing to a standard size before the site has been checked.

Swing or sliding gate?

A swing gate needs clear space in its opening direction. Rising ground can obstruct the leaf, so the design must suit the slope. A sliding gate needs space to the side instead. Walls, plants or parking spaces must not obstruct that travel area.

Posts and foundations are part of the job

Existing fence posts are not automatically suitable for a gate’s weight and leverage. A paved surface does not establish that an adequate foundation lies beneath it either. The installer should check fixings, masonry and ground before using them to support a new gate.

Agree who removes old posts, builds foundations and reinstates paving. Near a road or property boundary, opening direction, visibility and local requirements should be considered early. The municipality can confirm which checks or permissions apply to the particular location.

Automation involves more than adding a motor

The gate’s design, leaf dimensions, weight and fixings help determine the suitable operator. A gate that opens manually is not necessarily ready for automation. Its mechanical condition and overall suitability need checking first.

The quote should cover the required power supply, controls and appropriate safety features. At handover, ask about obstacle detection, trapping points and operation during a power failure. Have the installer demonstrate safe use and explain maintenance; do not work on electrical controls yourself when a fault occurs.

How much does a fitted garden gate cost?

The product price is only part of the bill. One Swiss retail example checked in October 2026 was a single-leaf mesh gate with stated dimensions of 100 × 100 cm, posts and accessories, advertised at CHF 319 including VAT. This is a material-only example, not an installed price; delivery, foundations and fitting need checking separately.

It does not establish the cost of a bespoke driveway gate or automated entrance. Compare quotes for the same clear opening, specification and installation work. A low purchase price can be offset by missing posts or substantial groundwork.

  • Supply. Compare leaves, posts, hinges, lock, finish and transport.
  • Building work. Include removal, excavation, foundations and surface reinstatement.
  • Automation. Check electrical connection, controls, safety equipment, commissioning and user instructions.

When repair may be worthwhile

A gate that drags, will not close properly or has a sticking lock does not always need complete replacement. Misaligned fittings, damaged hinges and a sinking post require different work, however. Describe what happens and give the operator’s make and model if available.

The quote should distinguish inspection, parts and repair work. Distorted leaves, significant corrosion or damaged foundations also call for an assessment of whether a lasting repair makes economic sense. Stop using an electric gate that starts unexpectedly or fails to stop reliably until it has been professionally checked.

Frequently asked questions

Can existing posts be reused?

Possibly. Their condition, fixings, spacing and load capacity must suit the new gate. An apparently sound surface is not enough to confirm this.

Do I need final ordering dimensions?

No. Approximate clear width and desired height are enough for the initial request. The installer should confirm fitting dimensions before ordering.

Can a gate be installed on sloping ground?

Yes, with a suitable design. Opening direction, ground clearance and movement space need checking. A standard model will not automatically fit.

Can every gate be automated?

No. Condition, geometry, weight, fixings and safety requirements must be assessed together. A suitable motor cannot compensate for faulty mechanics.

Will I need permission for a new gate?

That depends on the location and project. Check with the municipality before ordering, especially where the driveway, boundary or screening will change.
