Plan food manufacturing with clear quantity and quality requirements
A manufacturer undertakes agreed work for another business’s product or private label. An owned recipe, supplier formulation and open development create different commissions. Quantity, ingredients, packaging, shelf life and delivery need to fit together. Compare the complete service rather than only an advertised price per jar, kilogram or portion.
Define recipe status and requested work
State whether the recipe is complete, needs adaptation or must be developed. For a supplier formulation, clarify changes and use under your brand. A kitchen sample is not automatically a proven production process. Agree samples, assessment criteria and approval before a larger run.
| Starting point | Clarify before ordering |
|---|---|
| Owned recipe | Production adaptation and rights to changes |
| Supplier recipe | Usage, variants and ingredients |
| New development | Target profile, samples and next decision |
Distinguish order quantity from pack contents
State the total for this order and allocate flavours or recipes. Jar count is not content mass; count and fill weight belong together. Annual demand is a forecast, not a specific order. In open development, suitable sample or pilot quantities can be proposed first.
Agree ingredients and allergen handling
Agree procurement and supplied ingredients. Describe ingredients, known allergens and product exclusions without personal health information. Formulation, processing aids and possible cross-contact need technical review. A gluten-free or vegan request is a product property to verify, not a guarantee from the form.
Document hygiene and responsibilities
Self-control, traceability and recorded processes are business responsibilities. Agree testing, batch identification, deviations and contacts for complaints. A certificate does not guarantee every new product. Relevant notifications or permissions depend on the actual activity, product type and competent authority.
Check packaging and labels before print approval
Define container, fill weight, labels, outer carton and delivery condition. Agree who supplies and checks ingredients, allergens, nutrition, origin and other required information. Mandatory information and voluntary marketing claims are separate tasks. Packaging must fit processing, storage and intended sale; attractive design alone is insufficient.
Plan shelf life and delivery chain together
Shelf life depends on recipe, process, packaging and storage. A requested selling window is initially a target that needs support. Chilled, frozen and ambient goods have different logistics. Agree delivery condition and remaining shelf life on arrival; manufacture and sale-ready handover may have different dates.
Compare total costs for equivalent work
Development, samples, ingredients, setup, production, analytics, packaging and transport may be priced separately. Minima depend on process or container rather than a universal rule. Compare reserves, leftover materials, waste and storage. Unknown shipping or your own work should not be treated as free.
| Item | Comparison check |
|---|---|
| Production basis | Same recipe, quantity and variant allocation? |
| Packaging | Are containers, fill weight, labels and cartons included? |
| Delivery | Are temperature control, transport and remaining shelf life defined? |
Move from samples to an approved order
Prepare the idea, known variants, quantities, packaging, sales channel and date. Technical feasibility, samples and written product approval follow. Confirm recipe changes and additional costs before production. At handover compare quantity, batch records, packaging condition and storage instructions against the order.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a finished recipe?
No. Development or a suitable supplier formulation can be separate commissions.
Which quantity should I state?
Total for this commission, unit, variants and fill weight; do not confuse annual demand with one order.
Is every private label exclusive?
No. Agree recipe rights, brand use and exclusivity explicitly.
Can I choose any shelf life?
You can state a target. The product, process and storage must support it.
Are labels automatically included?
No. Define creation, technical checking, printing and application separately.
What is enough for the first request?
Type, recipe status, quantities, packaging, storage, market and timing, without personal health records.
