Size hired compressors and compare complete offers
A hired compressor can bridge maintenance, a breakdown or a project. What matters is the air actually needed at the point of use. An attractive machine rate is not a complete offer if treatment, connections, energy or return transport are missing.
Define the application and hire package
Explain whether hire replaces an existing station, supplies individual tools or supports a temporary production project. Unit numbers, locations and simultaneous consumers affect selection. A standby unit may be available without running continuously; its agreed hire period is still not zero.
| Need | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Replacement station | Connection, usable flow and transition without an unverified operating promise |
| Mobile project | Power, hoses, transport and permitted positioning |
| Quality-sensitive application | Required quality, treatment and verification at the agreed point |
State flow and pressure separately
Sizing depends on simultaneous delivery at the intended working pressure. Receiver litres describe storage capacity, not continuously available flow. Compare figures only with clear reference conditions; pressure, intake flow and usable delivery are different measures.
If consumption figures are unavailable, describe applications, known equipment and concurrent use. Have demand assessed rather than automatically hiring a large system. Describe different pressure circuits and multiple sites separately.
Match treatment to the application
Dryers, filters, condensate handling and suitable lines may be included or separately hired. A compressor advertised as low-oil or oil-free does not replace complete verification of the required air quality at the point of use. Water, particles and oil are separate requirements.
Special uses such as breathing air or sensitive production processes require explicit professional assessment. Document requirements, measurement points and responsibilities. An ordinary hire enquiry does not authorize such use.
Check power, positioning and connections
Clarify available electrical supply, connection conditions, space, access, hose lengths and couplings. Suitable output alone does not make a unit ready to connect. Combustion engines require appropriate positioning; portability does not permit arbitrary operation in enclosed spaces.
Agree who unloads, positions, connects and checks operating conditions. Pressurized connections and work on existing systems require qualified handling. Clarify noise, heat and condensate before delivery.
Separate calendar duration from operating hours
State the desired start and handover-to-return period. Even part of a day is a real requirement, although a supplier may agree a longer minimum billing period. Operating hours, included hours, excess hours and weekend rules should be stated separately in the quote.
Multiple units may have different hire periods and operating profiles. List them by unit or application point. Clarify extensions, early return and breakdown support; short-notice availability needs confirmation.
Compare total cost rather than base hire
Compare the same usable capacity and period. Energy, treatment and transport may outweigh the difference between two base rates. Check taxes, deposits, damage terms and return conditions without treating a refundable deposit as a final cost.
| Cost item | Comparable basis |
|---|---|
| Hire and usage | Billed duration, included operating hours and excess usage |
| Ancillaries and connection | Separate dryer, filters, receiver, hoses, couplings and setup |
| Energy and support | Consumption basis, included service and fault response |
| Delivery and return | Both journeys, unloading, cleaning, fuel level and agreed inspection |
Prepare handover and return
Prepare applications, unit count, known air figures, power supply, location and hire period. Sensitive operating records or credentials are unnecessary in the first enquiry. Unknown technical figures can remain open initially but need clarification before firm selection.
Then confirm equipment and responsibilities in writing. Record condition, meters, accessories, instruction and the fault contact at handover. Plan return so dismantling, residual pressure and transport are handled safely; documented return condition supports the final invoice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hire for a few hours?
State your actual short requirement. The supplier separately confirms minimum billing and collection or return times.
Is receiver size enough to choose a unit?
No. Usable delivery and working pressure matter for continuous demand; the receiver stores air.
What if air demand is unknown?
Describe applications, known consumers and concurrent use. Professional demand assessment is better than an assumed capacity promise.
Is treatment always included?
No. Dryers, filters and condensate handling must explicitly match the agreed scope. Verify quality at the relevant point of use.
Does standby time count as operating hours?
Hire duration and actual operating hours are separate measures. Their billing depends on the specific agreement.
Which costs may be missing from the machine rate?
Check both transport legs, connections, treatment, setup, energy, excess hours and return handling. A complete package becomes comparable once these are defined.
