Hiring a cold room: goods, temperature, space and costs
A hired cold room can cover events, seasonal extra stock or an existing unit’s failure. The goods and their requirements matter. Low-cost space is of little use if temperature, access or usable capacity are unsuitable. Clarify these points alongside duration and operation.
Start with the goods
Drinks, fresh food, frozen stock and sensitive technical goods need different conditions. State the actual use and known requirements. An available unit’s temperature is not a substitute for your goods’ needs. Different requirements may need separate zones.
Distinguish modular cold rooms, containers and trailers
The solution may be a modular cold room, larger container or trailer. Choose around space, goods handling and site rather than format alone. Equipment must suit frozen goods; a positive-temperature cold room is not a freezer room.
| Solution | Check before hire |
|---|---|
| Modular cold room | Indoor or outdoor positioning, access and equipment. |
| Refrigerated container | Footprint, delivery and goods access. |
| Refrigerated trailer | Usable size, stationary cooling and transport. |
Compare usable space beyond external dimensions
Internal volume is not fully usable storage capacity. Shelves, pallets, doors and routes take space; suitable air circulation must remain. Describe packaging and handling. Known pallet counts or quantities complement the size estimate.
Distinguish storage from initial cooling
Holding already-cold goods and quickly cooling warm products are different tasks. State known arrival temperatures, quantities and special conditions. Door opening and new goods change the load. Storage does not automatically replace suitable rapid-cooling equipment.
Clarify power, monitoring and site
Power and heat rejection must suit the selected equipment. Confirm access, ground conditions and instruction with the hire company. Mobile does not mean usable everywhere without preparation. For sensitive goods, agree necessary temperature monitoring, documentation and fault support.
A general suitability statement does not confirm every food or pharmaceutical use. Clarify equipment and procedures for your products. The request communicates requirements; it does not demand self-produced technical qualification.
Compare hire price and complete service
As a narrow example, an undated Swiss hire list offers a refrigerated trailer at CHF 250 from Friday to Monday, excluding VAT and transport. This is a particular trailer offer, not an average for cold rooms or freezer containers. Format, size, temperature and duration need to match.
| Cost item | Compare |
|---|---|
| Duration | Minimum, collection days, extension and return. |
| Delivery | Both journeys, setup, accessories and instruction. |
| Operation | Electricity, monitoring and agreed support. |
| End of hire | Cleaning, removal, VAT, deposit and exclusions. |
Request a suitable quote
State the goods, known target temperature, approximate space and duration. Describe special storage or handling needs together. Site and access help delivery. Equipment selection and missing technical details can be clarified with the specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Is every cold room suitable for frozen stock?
No. Achievable temperatures and suitability for the goods must match.
Must I know a model?
No. Describe use and space; the specialist proposes equipment.
Can a cold room be placed indoors?
Depending on equipment and site. Space, loading, heat rejection, power and access need assessment.
Can I quickly cool warm goods?
That is a separate requirement. Storage equipment is not automatically sufficient.
Are transport and electricity included?
Only as agreed. Compare hire, delivery, setup, energy and return separately.
How is temperature monitoring agreed?
Clarify the required range, measurement, records and responsible person. For sensitive stock agree alerts and procedures for deviations. Hired equipment does not automatically undertake these operating tasks or establish suitability for every food or medicine.
