Cat flaps: location, functions, installation and costs
A cat flap needs to suit the animal, the intended access and the building element. The work therefore depends on more than the product alone. The actual installation point, material, existing opening and desired functions matter. A clear enquiry separates supply of the flap from work on glass, door panels or walls.
Distinguish new fitting, replacement and restoration
New fitting may include advice, supply, surveying and installation. If you already have a flap, its suitability and the work required need checking. When replacing an existing flap, the opening, adaptor and fixings must be assessed for compatibility with the new one.
Removal and closing the opening are a separate scope. An available original pane or a new panel may be needed. Give the exact number of flaps or openings to be worked on; several installation points can be described together.
| Job | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Supply and fit a new flap | Product, accessories, work on the building element and fitting. |
| Fit a supplied product | Compatibility, missing components and installation. |
| Replace an existing flap | Suitable opening and any necessary alteration to the building element. |
| Remove and close the opening | Retained original part or a suitable new building element. |
| Advice on fitting | Suitable location, desired functions and next steps. |
Separate the location from the material being cut through
Depending on the situation, a flap may be in a window, balcony or patio door, another door or an external wall. The passage needs to suit the planned use on both sides. Door movement, clear space and access to the controls also matter.
The material at the passage point is important: in a glazed timber door the cutout may be in glass even though the frame is timber. Plastic doors may contain reinforced or layered panels. The contractor establishes unknown construction; you do not need to make test holes or carry out material tests.
For doors with particular functions or work on an external wall, agree responsibilities early. A fitter is not automatically also a glazier, wall-opening specialist and electrician. Have the required work and specialist contractors identified.
Have fitting in glass professionally planned
Insulating glass will usually need a suitable new glazed unit with a planned opening. This does not automatically mean replacing the whole window and frame. Toughened safety glass cannot be recut or drilled after toughening.
Known single, double or triple glazing helps with the enquiry. Unknown glass construction or dimensions can remain to be confirmed. The glazier determines the specification, final dimensions and suitable opening position.
Opening shape, dimensions, adaptor and glass construction are model-specific. An opening suitable for a different cat flap is not automatically right for the new product. Technical details need to be agreed before the glass is ordered; a supposed universal hole diameter is insufficient.
Coordinate door panels and wall connections
For timber, plastic or metal panels, construction, thickness, fixing and professional treatment of edges and joints matter. Metal within the element may affect some electronic models. Adaptors and the fitting solution depend on the product and actual conditions.
A wall passage may need a suitable tunnel, preparation work and coordinated internal and external connections. Insulation, waterproofing and existing services need consideration. Using a panel instead of glass is an option whose suitability, appearance and work involved need to be assessed.
Choose the functions you actually need
Simple models can be locked mechanically. Electronic versions may recognise authorised animals, for example through a compatible microchip or collar key, depending on the product. Timers, separate entry and exit rules, apps and cameras are additional model-specific functions.
Discuss usable passage size, locking behaviour and important limitations with the professional. Access control and prey detection are different functions. Smart features do not guarantee exclusion of unfamiliar animals, prevention of prey entry or protection against unauthorised access to the building.
Batteries, a power adaptor, hub and internet access may be required differently by different models. Agree who provides accessories, performs initial setup and carries out any connection work. For apps, also check required connections and optional recurring charges.
Consider supplied products and original parts
Describe existing models, adaptors or tunnels together, as far as known. Product documents may help with the later assessment. Missing model details are not a reason to order unchecked glass or a door panel.
If later restoration matters, discuss the solution before fitting. An original part removed without damage may be stored; whether it can be refitted depends on its condition, dimensions and the situation at that time.
Agree packaging, storage location and later work. A removal discount booked with initial fitting is not a general tariff for removing any cat flap. For rented premises, coordinate the alteration and desired restoration with the responsible manager or owner.
Compare the complete job
The price of a flap is not its fitted price. Installation in a suitable existing opening, renewing an insulating glass unit and creating a wall passage involve different services. A price without a defined scope is not a reliable guide.
Compare quotes for the same number, installation point and product supply. Check surveying, glass or panel, cutout, adaptor, tunnel, fitting and agreed additional work. A material price or discounted restoration option does not establish a Swiss average.
Clarify travel, delivery, disposal, VAT and treatment of removed original parts. Additional work should be approved before it is carried out. A provisional calculation using unknown dimensions differs from a quote confirmed after a survey.
Information that helps with a suitable quote
The known situation and required result are enough for the first enquiry. The professional should clarify missing technical details before specifying a new opening or building element.
- Scope and number. New fitting, replacement or removal, and the actual number of flaps or openings affected.
- Installation point. Window, door or wall and its known material; describe mixed locations together.
- Product. Supplied flap or required product supply, known models and important functions.
- Access and timing. Job location, highest affected floor for fitting, and desired timing.
- Restoration. Available original glass or panel, intended storage and required finished result.
From survey to suitable installation
Manufacturing a new pane or panel and fitting it are separate stages. Have delivery and installation coordinated. At handover, discuss operation, chosen locking functions, product care and agreed setup.
- Describe the project. State scope, installation points, number, supplied products and wishes.
- Establish suitability and dimensions. Have the building element, opening, model and necessary specialist work checked.
- Approve the quote and specification. Agree product, accessories, building elements and complete services before ordering.
- Fitting and handover. Have installation and functions checked and receive care and restoration documents.
Frequently asked questions
How much does fitting a cat flap cost?
It depends on the flap, material, opening and additional work on the building element. A product price alone does not include a new pane or fitting. Compare the full job with surveying, accessories, installation, travel and agreed restoration.
Can the existing pane simply be cut?
This is not generally possible. Toughened safety glass cannot be recut or drilled after toughening. For insulating glass, a suitable new unit manufactured with the opening is usually the intended solution. A glazier assesses the job without automatically replacing the whole window frame.
Can I have a cat flap I already bought fitted?
This may be possible. The contractor checks the model, opening, material, adaptor and other parts. State what you have; technical details can initially remain unknown. Missing accessories should be addressed before ordering glass or a panel.
Does every cat flap need a microchip?
No. Mechanical models and different access-control systems are available. Clarify the desired function and compatibility of the particular product. Apps, timers and control in both directions are not included with every model.
Does a smart flap guarantee that no prey comes inside?
No. Access recognition and prey detection are different functions with model-specific capabilities and limits. Have the actual features explained. A cat flap also does not replace protection of the building.
Can the flap be removed later?
Restoration can be planned. A suitable original pane or panel and its condition need checking; otherwise a new building element may be needed. Agree storage and later work without assuming removal is free or always involves the same job.
