Arrange a clear end-of-life vehicle handover
A complete car, a stripped shell and a damaged electric vehicle have different acceptance and transport requirements. A quote should cover more than collection: it should identify the intended treatment, possible charges and handover.
Distinguish disposal from used-vehicle sale
Handover for recycling differs from selling a vehicle that can still be used. Age and mileage alone do not decide this. If unclear, have condition and intended use assessed; calling it an export car does not automatically turn waste into ordinary used goods.
| Intention | What to agree |
|---|---|
| Recycle an end-of-life vehicle | Authorised recipient, transport, treatment and handover evidence |
| Sell a usable vehicle | Separate sale, condition and handover; not automatic disposal evidence |
| Buy replacement parts | Separate parts order matched to model and condition |
Choose an authorised recipient
In Switzerland, businesses accepting end-of-life vehicles for disposal need authorisation from their location canton, including vehicles already drained of fluids. Identify the actual receiving business and suitable authorisation, rather than only a transport intermediary.
Cross-border disposal has its own waste rules and permissions. Have the specific proposal checked before handover. A general promise of export or reuse does not establish that the chosen route is permitted.
Describe completeness and condition
State type, model and approximate year. Identify important missing components, fire damage or visible special damage. Removed parts can change acceptance conditions and residual value; a complete vehicle is not equivalent to an empty shell.
For several vehicles, start with a concrete list of types, counts and differing condition. Do not send identity copies, plates or full ownership files in the initial request. Authority to hand over and required originals are addressed for the agreed handover.
Plan delivery or collection
For your own delivery, agree the receiving appointment and transport. For collection, location, free or locked wheels and access matter: an open yard differs from a garage with limited clearance. A recycling quote does not confirm the vehicle is safe to drive.
Identify unusual drivetrains early
For electric, hybrid or gas vehicles, the recipient must check suitable treatment and transport. Flag known drivetrain or battery damage without opening components or draining fluids yourself. Unknown technical details can be assessed before acceptance.
Proper recycling involves more than metal recovery: specialists remove operating fluids and hazardous components, separate reusable parts and process materials. It is not a request for DIY dismantling at the parking location.
Arrange deregistration separately
Physical collection does not automatically deregister the vehicle. Check with the responsible road traffic authority how to handle the vehicle registration document and plates, and agree who performs each step. Cantonal fees, deadlines and plate options are not universal Swiss rules.
Compare fees and residual value as one overall quote
Advertised free collection can depend on vehicle type, completeness, damage or access. A purchase offer or residual value is also individual. Separate recycling, transport, difficult recovery and any payment, then compare the resulting total.
| Item | Clarify before agreement |
|---|---|
| Acceptance | Does the quote cover the stated condition and drivetrain? |
| Transport | Are collection, loading and difficult access included? |
| Treatment and payment | Which fees or agreed residual value determine the total? |
| Evidence | Which handover or recycling evidence will be issued? |
Complete a documented handover
Remove personal belongings before the appointment and clarify handling of personal vehicle data. Confirm recipient, count, condition and agreed payment or fee. Keep the job and handover evidence, matched to the vehicle actually accepted and its intended treatment route.
Frequently asked questions
Is collection always free?
No. Offers may include only complete vehicles or particular conditions and access. Confirm the terms and total for your vehicle.
Who can accept my end-of-life vehicle?
In Switzerland, the receiving disposal business needs suitable cantonal authorisation. Check the actual recipient, not only the collector.
Can a stripped vehicle be collected?
A business may offer this after checking condition and logistics. Missing components can change charges and acceptance.
What differs for an electric vehicle?
Identify the drivetrain and known battery damage early. The specialist checks transport and treatment; do not dismantle special systems yourself.
Does collection also deregister the vehicle?
Not automatically. Agree responsibilities and check the responsible authority’s procedure. Recycling evidence does not replace that check.
What is enough for an initial quote?
Type, count, models, completeness, drivetrain, known locality and requested collection or delivery. A concrete list is enough without plates, identity copies or ownership files.
