Replacing a car battery: choose the right complete service
A car that will not start does not automatically need a new battery. Its condition and the cause can be checked first. Comparable quotes require the model, battery function and scope of supply, fitting and technical adjustments. A starter or auxiliary battery is different from a traction battery.
Which battery is involved?
Explain whether the issue concerns starting, auxiliary electrical supply or the traction battery. An electric car can also have a separate auxiliary battery. If its function is unclear, the provider can check using the model. An ordinary replacement enquiry does not guarantee work on the high-voltage system.
| Need | Suitable scope |
|---|---|
| Starter / auxiliary battery | Test condition, identify and fit a compatible replacement |
| Unclear battery or cause | Diagnosis before speculative replacement |
| Traction battery | Establish separate specialist scope and suitable qualifications |
Separate testing from replacement
Slow starting or repeated discharge are observations, not a complete diagnosis. Testing can establish whether replacement, charging or investigation of another cause is appropriate. Agree whether further checks of the charging system or auxiliary electrics are included.
Compatibility comes before part price
Size, electrical ratings and technology must suit the vehicle. For start-stop systems, the specified EFB or AGM type and vehicle instructions matter. A cheaper incompatible replacement is not an equivalent offer. Let the workshop identify the specification rather than guessing capacity or technology yourself.
Include fitting and required adjustments
Access and vehicle electronics affect the work. Depending on the model, replacement may require registration or adaptation; this is not universal. Ask whether those tasks and a final functional check are included. For a customer-supplied battery, establish compatibility, fitting scope and responsibility for problems beforehand.
Workshop or mobile service
If the vehicle will not start, an available mobile service may avoid transport. Suitability depends on access, vehicle, replacement part and equipment. Give the known locality and unusual access conditions in the shared brief. A quote enquiry does not dispatch immediate roadside help; actual availability must be confirmed for urgent needs.
Compare total costs
Compare quotes for the same compatible battery and work scope. A part-only price leaves testing, fitting and travel unresolved. For several vehicles or several batteries in one vehicle, clarify quantity and allocation. There is no reliable uniform Swiss total price for every model and installation.
| Item | Comparison question |
|---|---|
| Battery | Which compatible technology and specification is supplied? |
| Testing and fitting | Are testing, removal and fitting included? |
| Vehicle electronics | Are required adjustments and final checks included? |
| Logistics and return | Which travel, transport and return tasks are agreed? |
Agree old-battery return and handover
In Switzerland, used batteries must be returned separately and do not belong in household waste. Consumer return to a retailer or authorised collection point is free; this does not make removal or collection automatically free. Agree who takes the old battery and have installed parts and completed work identified on the invoice.
The initial enquiry needs only model, year, known symptoms and handover preference. Registration plate, VIN, access codes and private records are not required in the initial form. Technical details can be clarified after matching with a suitable provider.
Frequently asked questions
Does a starting problem always require a new battery?
No. Request testing first where the cause is uncertain. Battery condition, charge level and other electrical causes are different issues.
Must I select AGM or EFB myself?
No. Give the model and known equipment. The workshop should select a compatible replacement using the vehicle requirements.
Does every new battery require registration?
It depends on the model. Confirm any required registration or adaptation and its costs; a universal rule for every car would be inaccurate.
Can I have a battery I already bought installed?
The provider must confirm this. Check compatibility and supply scope before the appointment; responsibility for the part and installation should be clear.
What matters if one vehicle has two batteries?
Vehicle count is then different from battery count. Describe known quantities and functions in the shared brief. The workshop should check which battery or combined set is affected.
Does free return also mean free removal?
No. Free old-battery return differs from labour and transport. Check which items the replacement quote includes.
