Business plan writing: define the right commission
A business plan links the idea, implementation and financial assumptions. Internal management, funding and development can need different emphasis. The commission should define writing, analysis and responsibility for underlying evidence.
Define purpose and audience
Clarify the decision and readers. An internal working document differs from a presentation for funders or partners. With multiple projects, define common and separate sections. Page count alone does not describe the work required.
Agree writing and analysis separately
A new plan, revising a draft and a plausibility review are different services. Specify market analysis, strategy, financial modelling and editing. Defining sound scope requires knowing which foundations exist and which must be developed.
| Service | Concrete output |
|---|---|
| Writing | Agreed text and specified annexes |
| Financial model | Traceable assumptions and scenarios |
| Review | Findings, gaps and needed changes |
Link the model and implementation
Offer, customer benefit, audience and distribution should fit together. Describe resources, responsibilities and milestones concretely. Market claims need evidence. Avoid presenting unproven demand or unsecured contracts as facts.
Make assumptions and payment timing visible
Revenue, costs, investment and funding need explained assumptions. Separate existing figures from forecasts. Revenue does not automatically mean simultaneous cash receipt. Agree scenarios and show change effects without promising future profitability.
Collect targeted foundations
Founding, expansion and succession need different information. Agree a purpose-specific evidence list. Contracts, current accounts and planning data may matter later. Initially project and draft readiness suffice; exchange sensitive records selectively and securely.
Compare outputs and revision rounds
Compare equivalent analysis, languages and financial modelling. Clarify interviews, research, feedback, revisions and editable files. Translation, presentation and third-party applications may be separate work. Agree when missing foundations or changes trigger extra effort.
| Quote item | Clarify before commissioning |
|---|---|
| Foundations | Supplied or newly researched? |
| Outputs | Text, model, annexes and files? |
| Revision | Rounds, changes and approval? |
Prepare approval and future use
Before approval, check consistency of text, figures and annexes. Responsible people should explain and maintain the assumptions. A plan is not a lending decision, grant award or valuation report. Later model and data changes should remain traceable.
Frequently asked questions
Are plans only for new businesses?
No. Expansion, financing and succession may also need a tailored plan.
Can an existing draft be revised?
Yes. Clarify gaps and revision rather than assuming complete rewriting.
Does a good plan guarantee funding?
No. Funders assess the project and their own conditions.
Are forecasts verified facts?
No. Identify and explain assumptions and scenarios.
Is a presentation automatically included?
No. Agree presentations, translation and submission explicitly.
Must I upload tax and bank records?
Not for the enquiry. Suitable evidence and secure exchange are agreed later.
