Business mobile plans: usage, overseas use and contract costs
A suitable plan depends on actual use, not just the advertised monthly fee. Staff can have different data and travel needs. Review the whole contract, including options, devices and switching terms.
Distinguish new plans, switching and optimisation
New plans need line counts and intended use. Switching also involves existing contracts and possible number transfer. Optimisation can happen without changing provider.
Voice, data and extra devices are separate needs. A second SIM is not automatically an independent plan.
Describe mobile tasks
Known consumption from existing bills helps. Include mobile work, video calls and sharing internet with other devices. Different groups need not all have one plan.
| Use | Comparison point |
|---|---|
| Voice | Included calls and special numbers |
| Data | Allowance, speed and behaviour after allowance use |
| Extra devices | Additional SIMs, compatibility and shared allowances |
| Work locations | Check reception where work actually happens |
Separate roaming and international calls
Roaming means using a foreign network. Calling abroad from Switzerland is another tariff item. Europe or international does not replace an exact country list.
Check data, incoming and outgoing calls and cost limits for actual destinations. Devices near borders can unintentionally join a foreign network.
Include devices and administration
Existing models must support the intended SIM or eSIM. Purchases, instalments and extra hardware differ from the line contract.
Define who approves options, checks bills and manages joiners or leavers. Numbers, credentials and activation codes belong in the protected contracting process.
Avoid unnecessary overlapping contracts
The desired date must fit cancellation and porting. Do not cancel prematurely before transfer arrangements are clear.
- Inventory. Lines, use, destinations and contract end dates.
- Compare. Equivalent services, duration and extras.
- Coordinate. Number transfer, SIM availability and switch date.
- Check. Reachability, data, options and the first bill.
Compare over the intended contract term
Promotional fees can rise later. Activation, additional SIMs, devices, overseas use and early termination may add costs. Check the actual scope of any limit; a display or alert alone does not prove an overall cap.
| Cost item | Clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Base fee | Promotion duration and later fee |
| One-off costs | Activation, setup and switching |
| Usage / options | Overseas use, extra devices and excluded services |
| Contract / hardware | Term, cancellation, remaining instalments and early end |
Keep plans and use understandable
Clarify terms for new staff, additional lines and leavers. Clear line and bill ownership supports ongoing control.
- Services. Countries, allowances and restrictions clear in writing.
- Switch. Dates and number transfer agreed.
- Operation. Owners, cost control and support contacts named.
Frequently asked questions
Must all staff use one plan?
No. Different data or travel needs may justify different plans.
Are international calls the same as roaming?
No. Calling from Switzerland and using a foreign network need separate review.
Does unlimited mean no restrictions?
Check countries, speeds, fair-use rules and excluded services in the contract.
Can an existing number stay?
Porting may be possible; confirm ownership, notice periods and procedure.
Is a new phone required?
Not necessarily. Check existing devices and offered SIM formats.
Why might the first bill be higher?
Activation, partial periods, options, devices or overlapping contracts can add items.
