Plan a consulting brief with a tangible result
Consulting becomes easier to compare when the decision and expected result are clear. A workshop, an analysis and implementation support involve different work and different contributions from your team.
Name the decision behind the brief
Describe what should change: direction, business model, collaboration or profitability. An observed problem is enough for the initial enquiry. You do not need to know its cause with certainty or choose a consulting method in advance.
A general brief does not automatically include bookkeeping, legal representation, software development or certification. Clarify the specialist skills required and who will perform those separate tasks.
Distinguish activities from deliverables
The number of consulting days does not describe the value on its own. Agree which documents, decisions or work stages should be delivered and who will approve them.
| Activity | Possible agreed deliverable |
|---|---|
| Initial assessment | Documented starting position, open questions and priorities. |
| Strategy development | Compared options, assumptions and a reasoned recommendation. |
| Organisation | Clear roles, interfaces and responsibilities. |
| Implementation support | Action plan with owners and verifiable milestones. |
Make evidence and assumptions visible
Existing indicators, customer feedback and process examples help test claims. Distinguish measurements, estimates and expectations. A small sample or an older market study should not silently be treated as a complete picture of today’s market.
Risks can have financial and qualitative effects. Identify developments that influence the decision and assumptions that still need testing. The first enquiry does not require confidential customer lists or complete annual accounts.
Agree collaboration and authority
Agree the lead consultant, available staff, interviews and decision process. Management remains responsible for its decisions. A recommendation does not automatically authorise a consultant to sign contracts or make staffing decisions.
Clarify confidentiality, data access, storage of results and potential conflicts of interest. Commercial relationships and additional payments connected with recommended products should be identifiable.
Compare the total effort
Compare the same phases and deliverables. A limited diagnostic brief can define a larger implementation more clearly. A national average fee without a defined assignment would not be reliable.
| Cost item | Clarify before commissioning |
|---|---|
| Analysis and workshops | Included preparation, interviews, sessions and documentation. |
| Fees | Fixed fee or time spent, named staff and approval of extra work. |
| Expenses | Travel, purchased data and outside specialist checks shown separately. |
| Implementation | Actions included and work requiring a further appointment. |
| Completion | Usable result files, handover and interruption costs. |
Prepare a useful enquiry
A short factual description is enough. Sensitive documents can be exchanged later through an agreed secure channel.
- Business. Describe industry, activity and affected teams or sites.
- Reason. Name the current challenge and decision to be made.
- Result. Distinguish analysis, recommendations, workshops and implementation help.
- Contribution. Identify available contacts, documents and important dates.
From initial discussion to a verifiable handover
Use clear stages so that new findings do not lead to uncontrolled additional work.
- Refine the brief. Discuss the goal, starting position, boundaries and expected result.
- Agree the approach. Record phases, responsibilities, fees and approvals.
- Review findings. Assess assumptions, alternatives and interim results together.
- Hand over and follow up. Agree actions, owners and an appropriate review date.
Frequently asked questions
Can a small business use consulting?
Yes. The specific question and suitable scope matter. A limited analysis or workshop may be more useful than a large programme.
Must I know which method is needed?
No. Describe your challenge and desired result. The consultant should explain why the proposed approach fits.
Are proposed measures already implemented?
Only if agreed. A concept, an action plan and its actual execution are separate services.
Can consulting guarantee commercial success?
No. Decisions, demand, internal execution and external developments affect the result. Agreed deliverables can still be defined in verifiable terms.
Must confidential figures go in the first enquiry?
No. Start with a general description. Purpose, authorisation and secure exchange of detailed information can be agreed later.
How should I compare quotes?
Compare deliverables, staff, internal participation, expenses and included implementation for the same brief. A low daily rate alone does not describe the total effort.
